The Memorial Day Celebration is in its thirty-first year, it occurs on the Saturday of
firsi three-day holiday of the year and has become an event ihat brings visitors and
tourists to this small community. lt is a day that the community of Easton triples in
size as tlre celebration offers not only a unique and fun parade, but a car show
street fair, a KidZone and time to celebrate our Nation.
Memorial Day is statistically the highest traffic volume of the year. According to the
WSDOT Geoportal Map. l-90 has anywhere from 40,000 to 80,000 vehicles on a
daily average traveling over Snoqualmie Pass. Coming from the west, visitors enter
Kittitas County at the top of Snoqualmie Pass and Easton is the first town in Eastern
Washington for visitors. Surrounded by State and Federal campgror:nds. private
recreational lodging, Memorial Day weekend is one of busiest for overnight stays.
Only one hour from Seattle, day trips to hike, bike, fish, and multiple other
recreational experiences can be accessed at Easton. Those who are traveling fiom
the east. fjnd that Easton is an easy location to travel to visit for a day, and celebrate
the three day weekend. The Memorial Day Celebration offers additional incentive for
visitors to stay overnight at one of the many campgrounds and private lodging
facilities offered close by.

When the Easton Memorial Day Celebration began, thirty-one years ago in 1991,
the event was primarily local people having fun and gathering to hold a parade in
celebration of Memorial Day. lt provided an oppodunity for community members to
gather, en.1oy each other and to remember those who foLrght for our Naiion. As the
event became more popular. and more volunteers came on board to plan, the event
became a daylong celebration. The celebration increased from offering a parade to
adding a street fair, car show, motorcycle show and KidZone.
Seeing the opportunity to provide a unique event in a very small town. the committee
began to look for more ways to market and promote the celebraiion. With the help of
Kittitas CLTAC grant funds the committee additional marketing options to help
spread the work about the Memorial Day Celebration. Using paid adverlising, online
marketing, printed posters and flyers that were distributed widely. we saw out small
local event growing into a popular event which began drawing more and more
people 50 miles or farther away. ln 20'19, we had our largest participation, 4,000
people! Our small-town community event has become a small-town celebration to
put on your calendar and attend.

Measuring Results*
Describe how yqu rlill promole you. event/activitylfacility to attrael tourists.
We plan to use multiple ways to attract tourists. Paid advertising on Kittitas and
Yakima radio stations, design and distribute posters and flyers, place paid ads on
our social media platforms and keep our website updated with Memorial Day
Celebration activities. The comnrittee works iogether to distribute information on the
Memorial Day Celebration. From Snoqualmie Pass to Ellensburg, pnnt flyers and
posters are placed in as many locations as we can possibly put them. We print small
postcards that are distributed event to lodging locations sc that their guests are
given them when they check-in. lnformation on the Easton Memorial Day
Celebration is posted on Discover Cle Elum, Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce,
Easton School District, Easton Fire Department, and multiple Facebook pages. This
has provided a tremendous amount of free promotion. We plan to continue with
these partnerships and look for additional ones that can help promote to a larger
audience.
This year through a generous donation, we will be able to update our website and
make it more inieractive to visitors. For thirty-one years our event materials have
been either hand made or designed by committee members using limited
knowledge. This year we are updating our publicity by adding additional funds in our
Memorial Day Celebration budget to receive help with our publicity and event
promotion. lt is time for us to identify and adopt some new or expanded ways in
which we can promote this wonderful celebration. We recognize that in the two years
since our event has occurred, there are new tips and ways to attracl visitors and
tourists. A lot of these changes align to online marketing and social media tools,
such as geofencing, lnstagram, paid advertising, YouTube and increasing our co-
marketing with local partners to obtain help in sharing aboltt our ev€nt.

how is this accomplished?
4.1 Collaboration *The Easton Memorial Day Celebration Committee takes time, each year, to confirm
partnerships and identify possible new ones. The committee is made up of
cornmunity menrbers and those who represent the Easton Fire Department, Easton
School Diskict, local organizations and businesses in Easton. Many of our padners
provide important components of the day's celebraiiorr. As an example, the Cabin
Creek Cruisers host lhe car show, the lron Freedom Motorcycle Club host the
motorcycle show. the Snomads snowmobile club host the beer garden. Our
partnership with the Easton School enables us to use their parking lot for the
KidZone which is one of our most popular activities during the day of celebrating.
Our publicity partners include the North Kittitas County Tribune who provide a partial
donation of our ads, Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce for their support of
advertising the celebration.

Our new website will continue to provide business directory for lodging, food. and
services. The difference will be that the directory will be tagged to a google map and
online tools which make them even more visible through social media and online
search engines. Offering this update mode of search off of our website ties the
Memorial Day Celebration directly to resources a traveler might utilize.
We will continue to add sponsors and donors to our website to help promote their
business. Eastorr has several campgrounds; State, Federal and private which will
also be added to our website. We are in the process of identifying B&B's, VRBO's
and Airbnb's that might like to have additional exposure through ourwebsite.
As we become more familiar with posting on FB and lnstagram, we will have the
ability to tag and / or promote our lodging faciliiies.
We've found that lodging facilities and our businesses like having the postcards, or
small cards on our event. We will continue to use those and include a QR code thai
links back to ourwebsite and the lodging resources we have available.
We have found that people like io look at our YouTube on the parade, see a list of
parade participants and Street Farr vendors. This information and lodging help
attract visitors. in turn promoting overnight stays.

5l Future Plans
Please explain what plans exist to allow this project to become self-sustaining. lnclude any plans for ticket sales,
event sponsors, and other cost-recovery models.
Future Plans*We continue to look for ways to help sustain our celebration. Each year we have
been able to increase our sponsorship, we obtained a gambling license to sell more
raffle tickets and ask for donations to support the costs of the celebration. We work
hard to seek additional funding to not only suppod this important event, but to meei
the rising costs associated with hosting events. For example. this year our budget
includes additional costs associated with COVID to ensure we are offering a safe
celebration. We will work hard to increase sales of our successful raffles that we
hold and seeking sponsors and donors in support of the celebration. We are also
seeking additional funding from different sources such as the Suncadia Fund for
Enhancement.
Our committee works hard to identify additional ways to cover the expenses that are
incurred for the Memorial Day Celebration. We now have a gambling license which
will enable us to do additlonal raffles throughout the year.

We are a community that is learning how to adapt and plan for safe gatherings. We
are meeting and planning a safe and fun Memorial Day Celebration, At this time,
those plans include a 2019 style of celebration. Parade, Street Fajr, car and
motorcycle show, KidZone and maybe more. As we work to plan a "normal"
celebration, we are keeping our minds open to the potential of needing to adapt
should there be reslriction due to health concerns. We've learned a lot about
planning and have used some ofthose methods for the several other events tlrat
Easton offers. We are hopeful and excited about bringing our community and our
visitors together to celebrate our Nation, each other, and those we lost.

Past overnight stay data was collected through direct count and informal survey. We
go prior to the event and ask local lodging facilities to share the number of guests
that they will be registering. The direct count comes from those lodging
establishments and RV facilities that follow through with their lodging report. We
combine this with an informal survey result of 10% estimated overnighi stays for
those facilities that did not report.

The Easton Memorial Day Celebration Committee has determined that if there are
shortfalls. we would need to expand our raffle p.ograms and sell more tickets. We
would also ask our businesses to allow donations to be taken in support of the
celebration. Our event is loved and supported county-wide, so we could also do a
county-wide donation drive.
