1. Visitors: Based on our daily attendance logs, lp code surveys, guest book
entries, and in person visitor discussions, we knowthat WSSSM 6,000 annual
visitors come from many regions. While the majority are from the 50+ mile radius of
the Seattleffacoma melro area, feriver than 10% come from inside Kittitas County.
Other top destinations in the state include Bainbridge lsland, Yakima, and
Snohomish County. Top states mentioned in recent guest book logs include
Oregon, California, ldaho, Colorado, Lltah, Montana, Alaska, Virginia, Vermont,
Ohio, NewMexico, Haraaii, Florida, and Maine. International visitors include
Canada, UK, Japan, Malaysia. Ausiralia. Bra2l, France, and others.
2. Year-round destination: During the winter, the main attraction on Snoqualmie
Pass is skiing and snovrrboarding. The Summit at Snoqualmie drar,w approximately
600,000 visitors as the area is jrist an hour from the Seattle area on a l-90 wtrich
connects u/estern and eastern Washington. Outdoor recreation in the summer,
spring and fall make the area a year-round tourist destination. Being a museum
about outdoor recreation, makes WSSSM an ideal destination for the audience at
the Pass.
3. Location: WSSSM is ideally located .just off 190, exit 52 eastbound, on busy
route 906, across lhe street from the Chevron and The Summit lnn in the new Pass
Life developnrent. WSSSM sits in between tlvr popular establishments - the
Commonwealth restaurant and Dru Bru Breu, rery, nraking the museum easy to
4. Story-Telling Museum: Because \€ are a newer facility opened in 2015, the
museum uras created as a storytelling, interactive museum. Monitors throughout
enhance the experience of each eiribit. Kids and adults alike love to push the
button to activate the enormous rope towthat resides in the museunt's rafters.
Because \e are a smaller museum. each visit is really a personal tour by a
museum volunteer who will cater to each visitor's interests. With many families
home schooling, parents are looking for local in person learning opportunities and
WSSSM easily fits that niche. Our new snor, rboarding e>&ibit, set to open in 2021 ,
will attract a more diverse audience to the museum.
5. Event Space: WSSSM is an ideal event space. With the Commonuealth
restaurant able to cater food and Dru Bru for drinks, organizations like Tearn
Alpental Snoqualmie and other private individuals have utilized the museum for
their ovrn parties. We also offer a conference room with digital screens and hook
ups for meetings.

Application Questions: Part 2
Describe the prior success of your evenUactivily/facility in atlraclicl,r lourists.
Each year, WSSSM hosts in person events that attract between 150-300 attendees
per event. ln 2019, we hosted Martin Volken, backcountry ski guide. In 2018. lw
hosted Larry Schick, the "Porader Poobah" to talk about the upcoming ski season
u,eather and Mark Music from Sturtevant's to lalk about the latest in ski equipment.
ln 2018, u,e did a meet'n greet with Olympian Phil Mahre right around the time of
the Winier Olympics. ln 2017, Loraell Skoog gave a presentation about the
Mountaineers Patrol Race, the oldest continuing ski race, first held in 1930.
We have advertised these events throughout own ra,ebsite, \MM/v.\/sssm.org, our
email list, Facebook (some small, targeted paid campaigns) mailed postcards and
those posted around the pass and at strategic partner locations. We have also
sponsored events where are target audience might be located including the
Warren Miller ski nrovies and the Ski Bonkers sale put on by Sturtevant's. Booths at
these events (over multiple days) have allor, red us lo advertise our events, promote
tourism at the Pass and in Kittitas County, and showcase the offerings of the

While specific events draw larger crowds, the regular museum visitors have been
drann in by permanent WSDOT freevray signage advertisirrg the mr-rseum on l-90
both tr,est and east bound (NEXI EXT signage). Our ner*ly revamped r,rirebsite and
social media interaction has also been a good source of marketing for the museum.
With Covid, eperts predict that small, local, museums like WSSSM will benefit.
"Tourism recovery typically begins locally," said Elizabeth Monahan, of
Tripadvisor.com. "Travelers tend to first venture out closer to home, and visit their
local eateries, stay local for a weekend geta\,ay or travel domestically before a
robust demand for international travel returns.' (CNBC, "Travel changed after 9111
Here's how it will look afler the Covid- 19 pandemic finally recedes," May 10, 2020).
Outdoor activity at the pass this summer \fias over capacity. Wilh many families
having flexible \iork and school schedules, this winter season will be very busy,
predicts Guy Lawence, General Manager of The Summit at Snoqualmie and

kscribe how you will prorote your elenvactivity/facility to attract twrists.
The Washington State Ski & Snor,r,board Museum's project is year-round, with
various campaigns promoting the museum at different tinres of the year (winter,
spring, summer, and fall). We expect advertising to drawindividuals to Kittitas
County from Western Washington, with the targeted demographics of more ihan
50+ miles, including those in lhe Seattle-Tacoma area.
To measure our success, ue will continue to keep a daily count of visitors to the
nluseum as uell as a guest book log that asks for addresses. The museum also
has a register book that shorls the extent of our geographical draw and method of
hearing about us. With this being the first year that the museum has applied for the
lodging tax, ra,e plan to implement a new electronic survey system to better track
specific 2p codes and overnight lodging details from visitors.
To promote our events, u,e plan to implement a targeted internet and social media
campaign, possibly with video, to attract visitors to the museum and shora, case our
events. We will also utilize targeted print campaigns. Geographic targeting for this
first year will be focused on the Seattleffacoma DMA. Demographic targeting will
be focused on skiers and those interested in history and museums. We will have a
particular interesi in snovr, boarders this year with our new exhibit opening. With
Olympic Gold Medalist Debbie Arnrstrong recently joining our board (she has an
immense social media following), we hope to attract a much larger social media
audience.
We also plan to utilize our partner organizations to promote these campaigns.
Current and pasl partners include The Sumnril at Snoqualmie, Dru Bru Brer,r,ery
Commonuealth, Sturtevant's, and Warrerr Miller Errtertainnrent.
The Museum seeks funding to support advertising for general au,areness of its
current and new e*ribits and to celebrate our 5th anniversary.
To help promote tourism generally in Kittitas County, WSSSM is a member of
CAMAH (Cascade Associations of Museums and History). ln 2021 , ra,e plan to add
Central Washington Outdoor to our partner list. We plan to add brochures to our
facility and other information to our urebsite about Kittitas County tourism. We will
also r,r,ork with local lodging facilitres to increase tourism.
h 2A20, we had planned on sponsoring Dru Bru's events (Snoqualmie Pass Tunnel
Run and more) but those wrgre cancelled due to Covid. We plan to r,rork with other
partners at The Pass to promote events in Kittitas County happening at The Pass.

Future Plans*The Washington State Ski & Snoi, tboard Museum has plans to make this program
self-sustain ing,
Previously, WSSSM marketing epenses had been utilized for printed rack cards,
brochures, posters, a basicwebsite, Facebook, and email campaigns. ln 2019, r,re
did a major ralebsite revamp, and added lnstagram, YouTube, and some limited
paid Facebook advertising to our social media efforts. We have also found larger 6
x 9 direct mail postcards to our mailing list to be an effective way of generating
RSVPs for our events. Each year, \,\,e pay for WSDOT freeway signage advertising
the museum on l-90.
ln 2019, we also invested marketing dollars to create a WSSSM booth with free-
standing signage, table signage and givear, vays, including WSSSM pens, Bob Cram
notecards, WSSSM stickers, WSSSM gift tags. and most recently WSSSM
stylusipens for use in the museum during Covid. This booth has gotten
considerable usage at our o\,4/lr events. Warren Miller movies, Ski Bonkers and
event at The Summit at Snoqualnrie.
After investing dollars in WSSSM's digital and in person marketing presence the
past t\ io years. with ihe help of the Kitiitas County Lodging Tax Grani r € are now
ready to invest in a paid digital campaign with a targeted, supported print
canrpaign. This campaign will have three components:
1. General Museum Awareness/MarketinglTourismA/isit Us Campaign which will
change by season for 2021
2. New Snovrboarding Exhibit Set to Operr in 2021
3. 5th Anniversary Celebration Events in 2021 (planned for spring)

2020 lnformation lf you hatl a planne,tl event in 2020. whetlrcr il was ade lo take place or rrot, please describe any sr:cc;esses and
challerrges you experienced.
Due to Covid, WSSSM's doors rrcre closed from March 1O-September 26,2020.
While this time frame is not typically one in rirhich \lue host events, it is one that sees
a busy summer travel season of visitors to the museum. Surprisinc to some,
WSSSM is just as busy in the summer as it is in the winter. What was impacted, rivas
WSSSM's partner programs with Dru Bru, The Sunrmit at Snoqualmie, and others.
ln the fall of 2019, WSSSM has many discussions with Dru Bru about partnering
our spaces iogether to host a series of events including lectures, music. and beer
tastings, and other private events. We were also set to sponsor Dru Bru's already
successful tunnel run. Due to Covid, these events were not able to get siarted in
2420. Our events typically planned for the late fall of 2020, have been moved to
the Spring of 2021 .

Additional lnformation WSSSM is very excited io be applying for the Kittitas County Lodging Tax Grant for
the first time! If awarded, we promise to be good ste\^Erds of grant funds. As the
Marketing Director for the museum, I, Kathy McDonald, bring more than 25 years of
marketing expertise to our organization. I look forward to paftnering with others in
the county to raise avvareness and create tourism events and opportunities for both
WSSSM and other partners in the county.
As WSSSM enters its Sth year of operation, \,le are super excited about 3 things:
'1 . Debbie Armstrong (Olympic Gold Medal Winner) is now on our Board of
Directors and will bring increased awareness to our nruseum with her immense
social media following.
2. Our new joint ehibit on ski jumping with the National Nordic Museum in Seattle
set to launch irr January 2021 \ ill bring increased auareness of WSSSM to visitors
in the Seattle area.
3. ln conjunciion with our Sth anniversary celebration, u,e are launching our first big
new eiribit change in 2021 . The Snora, boarding e>tribit should bring lots of
attention to a younger audience to the museum and create a buzz.
We look forward to hopefully partnering with you in 2021 . Thank you so much for
this opportunity and vrc look forward to presenting this application to you verbally.
