1. Visitors: Based on our daily attendance logs, lp code surveys, guest book
entries, and in person visitor discussions, we knowthat WSSSM 6,000 annual
visitors come from many regions. While the majority are from the 50+ mile radius of
the Seattleffacoma metro area, fei.rier than 10% come from inside Kittitas County.
Other top destinations in the state include Bainbridge lsland, Yakima, and
Snohomish County. Top states meniioned rn recent guest book logs include
Oregon, California, ldaho, Colorado, LJtah, Montana, Alaska, Virginia, Vermont,
Ohio, NewMexico, Haraaii, Florida, and Maine. lnternatiorral visitors include
Canada, UK, Japan. Malaysia. Australia, Brazil, France, and others.
2. Year-round destination: During the winter, the main attraction on Snoqualmie
Pass is skiing and snou, boarding. The Summit at Snoqualmie drarrs approximately
600,000 visitors asthe area is jr,rst an hourfromthe Seattle area on a l-90v/nich
connects western and eastern Washington. Outdoor recreation in the summer.
spring and fall make the area a year-round tourist destination. Being a museum
about outdoor recreation. makes WSSSM an ideal destination for lhe audience at
the Pass.
3. Location: WSSSM is ideally located just off l-90, exit 52 eastbound, on busy
rouie 906, across the street from the Chevron and The Summit lnn in the new Pass
Life development. WSSSM sits in between tlvr popular establishments - the
Commonwealth restaurant and Dru Bru Breuery, making the museum easy to
access.
4. Story-Telling Museum: Because \rye are a nerarer facility opened in 2015, the
museum uras created as a storytel|ng, interactive museum. Monitors throughout
enhance the experience of each e>&ribit. Kids and adults alike love to push the
button to activate the enormous rope towthat resides in the nruseunr's rafters.
Because \ € are a smaller museum, each visit is really a personal tour by a
museum volunteer who will cater to each visitor's interests. Wrth many families
home schooling, parents are looking for local in person learning opportunities and
WSSSM easily fits that niche. Our new snorrboarding erhibit, set to open in 2A21 ,
will attract a more diverse audience to the museum.
5. Event Space: WSSSM is an ideal event space. With the Commonrlealth
restaurant able to cater food and Dru Bru for drinks, organizations like Team
Alpental Snoqualmie and other private individuals have utilized the museum for
their own parties. We also offer a conference room with digital screens and hook
ups for meetings.

Dscribe the prior success of your eventlactivMacility in attractron lcRrrists.
Each year, WSSSM hosts in person events that attract between 150-300 attendees
per eveni. ln 2019, ue hosted Martin Volken, backcountry ski guide. ln 2018. urrg
hosted Larry Schick, ihe "Pottrder Poobah" to talk about the upcoming ski season
wgather and Mark Music from Sturtevant's to talk about the latest in ski equipment.
ln 2018, rre did a meet'n greet with Olympian Phil Mahre right around the time of
the Winter Olympics. ln 2017, Louell Skoog gave a presentation about the
Mountaineers Patrol Race, the oldest continuing ski race, first held in 1930.
We have advertised these events throughout ovm uebsite, wwv.\n/sssm.org, our
email list, Facebook (some small, targeted paid campaigns) mailed postcards and
those posted around the pass and at stralegic parlner locations. We have also
sponsored events where are target audience might be located including the
Warren Miller ski nrovies and the Ski Bonkers sale put on by Sturtevant's. Booths at
lhese events (over multiple days) have allotred us to advertise our events, promote
tourism at the Pass and in Kittitas County, and shorarcase the offerings of lhe
museL'm.
While specific events draw larger crolrds, the regular museum visitors have been
drawn in by permanent WSDOT freeway signage advertising the museum on L90
both irest and east bound (NEXT EXT signage). Our ner,t/y revamped vl,ebsite and
social media interaction has also been a good source of marketing for the museum.
With Covid, eperts predict that small, local, museums like WSSSM will benefit.
"Tourism recovery typically begins locally," said Elizabeth Monahan, of
Tripadvisor.com. "Travelers tend to first venture out closer to home, and visit their
local eateries, stay local for a weekend geta\ ,ay or travel domestically before a
robusl demand for international travel reiurns." (CNBC, "Travel changed after 911 1;
Here's how it will look after the Covid-19 pandemic finally recedes," May 10, 2020).
Outdoor activity at the pass this summer \n as over capacity. With many families
having flexible lr,ork and school schedules, this winter season will be very busy,
predicts Guy Lawrence, General Manager of The Summit at Snoqualmie and
WSSSM Board Member.

Describe how you will promrle your errenUacliviVfacilily to atlract fourists.
The Washington Staie Ski & Snovrboard Museum's project is year-round, with
various campaigns promoting lhe museum at different times of the year (winter,
spring, summer, and fall). We expect advertising to drawindividuals to Kittitas
County from Western Washinglon, with the targeted demographics of more than
50+ miles, including those in the Seattle-Tacoma area.
To measure our success, rne will continue to keep a daily count of visitors to the
museunr as well as a guest book log that asks for addresses. The museum also
has a register book that shor,rs the extent of our geographical draw and method of
hearing about us. With this being the first year that the museum has applied for ihe
lodging tax, r,r,e plan to implement a new electronic survey system to better track
specific 2p codes and overnight lodging details fronr visitors.
To promote our events, vrc plan to implement a targeted internet and social media
campaign, possibly with video, to attract visitors to the museum and shor*case our
evenis. We will also utilize targeted print campaigns. Geographic targeting for this
first year will be focused on the Seattle/Tacoma DMA. Demographic targeting will
be focused on skiers and those interested in history and museums. We will have a
particular interest in snoiniboarders this year with our new exhibit opening. With
Olympic Gold Medalist Debbie Armstrong recently joining our board (she has an
immense social media followng), we hope to attract a much larger social media
audience.
We also plan to utilize our partner organizations to promote these campaigns.
Curent and past partners include The Sumntil at Snoqualmie, Dru Bru Brer, rery,
Commonwealth, Sturtevant's, and Warren Miller Entertainnrent.
The Museum seeks funding to support adveriising for general awareness of its
current and newe*ribiis and to celebrate our Sth anniversary.
To help promote tourism generally in Kittitas County, WSSSM is a member of
CAMAH (Cascade Associations of Museums and History). ln 2021 , r,r,e plan to add
Central Washington Outdoor to our partner list. We plan to add brochures to our
facility and oiher information to our \4iebsite about Kittitas County tourism. We will
also u,ork with local lodging facilities to increase tourism.
ln 2020, we had planned on sponsoring Dru Bru's events (Snoqualnrie Pass Tunnel
Run and nrore) but those were cancelled due to Covid. We plan to i,r,ork Wth other
partners at The Pass to promote events in Kittitas County happening at The Pass.

these events. We also partner with other location organizations to promote these
events through Facebook groups. As a member of CAMAH, we will utilize our
contacts in Kittitas County to cross-promote our activities with other museums. The

Future Plans*The Washington State Ski & Snoraboard Museum has plans to nrake this program
self-sustain ing.
Previously, WSSSM marketing epenses had been utilized for printed rack cards,
brochures, posters, a basic \ebsite, Facebook, and enrail campaigns. ln 2019, we
did a major vr,ebsite revamp, and added lnslagram, YouTube, and some limited
paid Facebook advertising to our social media efforts. We have also found larger 6
x 9 direct mail postcards to our mailing list to be an effeciive \ €y of generating
RSVPs for our events. Each year, r,r,e pay for WSDOT freeraray signage advertising
the museum on l-90.
ln 2019, we also invested marketing dollars to create a WSSSM booth with free-
standing signage, table signage and giveavvays, including WSSSM pens, Bob Cranr
notecards, WSSSM stickers, WSSSM gift tags. and most recently WSSSM
stylusipens for use in the museum during Covid. This booih has gotten
considerable usage at our o\.4r events, Warren Miller movies, Ski Bonkers and
event at The Summit at Snoqualmie.
After investing dollars in WSSSM's digital and in person marketing presence the
past two years, with the heip of the Kiititas County Lodging Tax Grant \ne are now
ready to invest in a paid digital campaign with a targeted, supported print
canrpaign. This campaign Wll have three components:
1. General Museum AwarenesslMarketing/TourismlVisit Us Campaign which wll
change by season lor 2021
2. New Snovrfooarding Exhibit Set to Open in 2021
3. 5th Anniversary Celebration Events in 2021 (planned for spring)

Due to Covid, WSSSM's doors vrcre closed from March 16-September 26,202O.
While this time frame is not typically one in wlrich we host events, it is one lhat sees
a busy summer travel season of visitors to the museum. Surprising to some,
WSSSM is just as busy in the summer as it is in the winter. Whal u/as impacted, r,ras
WSSSM's partner programs with Dru Bru, The Sunrmit at Snoqualmie, and others.
ln the fall of 2019, WSSSM has many discussions with Dru Bru about parttrering
our spaces together to host a series of events including lectures, music, and beer
tastings, and other private events. We u,ere also set to sponsor Dru Bru's already
successful tunnel run. Due to Covid, these events \4€re not able to get started in
2A2O. Our events typically planned for the late fall oI 2020, have been moved to
the Spring ol 2021 .

Additional lnformation WSSSM is very excited to be applying for the Kittitas County Lodging Tax Grant for
the first time! lf awarded, ue promise to be good sterrards of grant funds. As the
Marketing Director for the museum, I, Kathy McDonald, bring more than 25 years of
marketing expertise to our organization. I look forward to partnering Wih others in
the county to raise av1/areness and create tourism events and opportunities for both
WSSSM and other partners in ihe county.
As WSSSM enters its Sth year of operation, lve are super excited about 3 things:
1. Debbie Armstrong (Olympic Gold Medal Winner) is now on our Board of
Direclors and will bring increased a\n€reness to our nruseum with her immerrse
social media following.
2. Our new joint eftibit on ski jumping with the National Nordic Museum in Seattle
set to launch in January 2021 uill bring increased araareness of WSSSM to visitors
in the Seattle area.
3. ln conjunction with our Sth anniversary celebration, rae are launching our first big
new eiribit change in 2021 . The Snora, boarding e*ribit should bring lots of
attention to a younger audience to the museum and create a buz.
We look fonnard to hopefully partnering with you in 2A21. Thank you so much for
this opportunity and u,e look forward to presenting this application to you verbally.
