SPECIAL MEETING FIRE MARSHAL POSITION COMMISSIONERS
At 8:00 a.m. Chairman Osiadacz opened a Special Meeting to consider
a decision on the structure of the Fire Marshal/Code Official/Fire
Investigator position.
Sheriff Gene Dana said whichever way the Board decides to go with
the Fire Marshal position he believed it would work. He explained
how they have the infrastructure in place to help support a Fire
Marshal, and they would be happy to take it on as it directly
relates to public safety.
Commissioner O’Brien moved to approve and authorize the current
candidate be offered the position as Fire Marshal and to have the
position remain under the direction of the Community Development
Services Department, and to direct Staff to include the position of
a Deputy Fire Marshal in the 2019 budget. Commissioner Wright
seconded.
Commissioner O’Brien explained the benefits of keeping the Fire
Marshal position under the direction of CDS and said the candidate
meets all the marks. He was in favor of keeping the job description
as is too.
Commissioner Wright said he received a lot of good comments over the
past week, especially from the building community. He indicated he
would not be opposed to revisiting the issue sometime down the road.
He said the Board would continue to examine the process and
expressed his appreciation to the Sheriff’s Department for serving
as the Interim Fire Marshal.
Chairman Osiadacz explained how she did not believe there was a
conflict of interest for her in making a decision on the Fire
Marshal, but rather she felt she could provide additional

information. She said she would be voting against the motion and
felt there was a lot of discussion and hopes the position is
successful but believed they may be missing an opportunity to do
something better for the citizens of Kittitas County.
Motion approved 2-1 (Chairman Osiadacz Opposed)).
Meeting adjourned at 8:18 a.m.
