RE: Yakima River Canyon Marathon on April 1, 2017
Dear Board of County Commissioners,
I have reviewed the Special Event Application submitted by Bob & Lenore Dolphin for
the Yakima River Canyon Marathon. This event is well organized and has little impact on
traffic. The Sheriff s Office will be providing volunteer Reserve Deputies to assist the
actual event and regular deputies will only be called in if something major should
happen.
This event is good for the community as it attracts several hundred runners and their
families to the area. I recommend approving this event.
Sincerely,
Gene Dana,
Sheriff

Re: Yakima River Canyon Marathon Special Event
Dear Mrs. Buchholz,
In regard to the above mentioned project, I have the following comments:
o An event permit is not required from the Fire Marshal's Office for this event.
■ After review of the event permit, I have found no life safety/fire code issues that need to be
addressed from this office.
The intent of the IFC is to provide a reasonable level of life safety and property protection from the
hazards of fire, explosion or dangerous conditions. If you have further comments or questions, please
do not hesitate to contact me at 509-962-7000.
Sincerely,
Josh Hink

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
Mark Cook, PE Director
TO. Kittitas County Board of County Commissioners
FROM Luke Huck P.E. County Engineer
DATE: February 6, 2017
SUBJECT: Yakima River Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon Event Application
After review of the application and letter dated January 24, 2017 for the proposed Yakima River
Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon Event. I have found that the Yakima River Canyon
Marathon committee attempted to address Traffic Control on Public Roads under section three
and four of the aforementioned letter. Section three states the Yakima River Canyon Marathon
committee is working with the Yakima and Kittitas sheriff's departments, Yakima and Ellensburg
police departments, and WSDOT to provide a safe race. Section four states that only local area
residents, fisherman, volunteers and course officials will be permitted on State Highway 821
from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 pm. And that passes will be issued to those who require access during
that time. Additionally it is identified that WSDOT will be working to assist in notification of the
closure to trucks and other traffic.
I do not see where it is identified how traffic control techniques will be administered along the
County roadways. According to the map depicting the course, Canyon Rd, Berry Rd, Tjossem
Rd, and Woodhouse Loop will all be affected in conjunction with State Highway 821.
The applicant will be required to provide Kittitas County Public Works with additional information
on the proposed traffic control strategies to be implemented along County roads for review and
approval. Traffic control strategies shall b,, in a manner that not only facilitates the event
participants but also the local traffic. Additionally the applicant will be required to issue
advanced notification of any traffic impacts or modifications associated with their traffic control
proposal.
The application and letter provided indicates that other potential issues associated with Law
Enforcement/EMS needs, Health and Environmental, and bonding etc. will be addressed by
other departments. Please feel free to contact Kittitas County Public Works with any additional
questions you may have at 509-962-7523.
Thanks,
