KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
AGENDA STAFF REPORT
AGENDA DATE: October 3, 2023
ACTION REQUESTED: Request to Approve a Resolution initiating County Road
Project designated as CRP NO: 318-23, Huntzinger Rd
Safety Improvements -Phase 1.
BACKGROUND: Kittitas County was awarded $1,581,000 from the Highway
Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) for safety
improvements on Huntzinger Rd between MP 5.14 and MP
10.74. Additional roadway segments are to be pursued in
future funding phases. Huntzinger Rd is characterized by
areas of curves; both vertical and horizontal, steep
embankments, and little shoulder width which are
contributing factors to run-off road accidents. The project is
a priority because recreation opportunities and new resident
traffic are rapidly increasing along this roadway. Funding
allows for implementation of guardrail, signing and
delineation improvements to this corridor.
HSIP funding is through the Washington State Department
of Transportation (WSDOT). The award does not require
matching local funds if design and construction are
authorized prior to April 30, 2026.
In order to meet the requirements of the program the project
needs to be initiated as a county road project and needs to be
added to the WSDOT Statewide Transportation
Improvement Program.
INTERACTION: Public Works
RECOMMENDATION: Approve a Resolution initiating County Road Project
designated as CRP NO: 318-23, Huntzinger Rd Safety
Improvements -Phase 1.
HANDLING: Return one (1) original to Public Works
ATTACHMENTS: Resolution
LEAD STAFF: Josh Fredrickson, County Engineer
