KITTITAS COUNTY SHERIFF'S STUDY SESSION MINUTES COMMISSIONERS' AUDITORIUM, 205 WEST 5TH ROOM 109 - ELLENSBURG Regular Meeting WEDNESDAY 1 8:00 AM I June 4, 2025 Board members present: Commissioner Brett Wachsmith and Vice -Chairman Cory Wright. Others: Sheriff Clay Myers, Inspector Chris Whitsett, and members of the public were present. Citizen Comments: None. Proclamation in reference to DHS identifying Kittitas County as a sanctuary County (Action Item): Sheriff Myers provided a brief background when Governor Inslee had proclaimed Washington as a sanctuary state as governor, and legislation was passed that put restrictions on contracts that jurisdictions could have with federal governments, and ICE. Some contacts include provisions for detaining people in jail who were detained by federal agents. Sheriff Myers mentioned that last week, May 29th, the Department of Homeland Security published a list on their website of counties as sanctuary counties and Kittitas County was one listed. Sheriff informed the board that he spoke on what law enforcement is in "keep Washington working' and that he put out a statement of responsibilities. Sheriff s Office feels we need a response, and it should come from the board as legislative branch for the county. Commissioner Wright mentioned he is struggling with this, and clarification is necessary. Sheriff Myers said that federal immigration law is federal immigration law; we don't have the authority to enforce it, this needs to be addressed in an educated matter. The proposal for a proclamation raised questions and Commissioner Wright mentioned he is not ready to act on this and wants to review and think about this. Other business: The EOC is moving forward.
