Law & Justice Study Session Minutes
November 1, 2017
Commissioners Auditorium
Meeting called to order at 0810 a.m.
Present: Commissioner Obie O'Brien, Sheriff Dana, Undersheriff Myers, Commander Higashiyama, Jim
Goeben, Greg Zempel.
Discussion on county/city EM — Commissioner Obie O'Brien advised Commander Higashiyama to move
forward with reach out to the cities, but to place on a Monday meeting to discuss with other Commissioners.
Action taken: none
Discussion on Suspicious Email (PRA) — Sheriff Dana discussed how the Sheriff s Office received an email
that didn't identify the sender or the attachment and how the employee who reviewed the emails that day,
reported it as "suspicious email". It came about when the requestor called to find out the status of the request
they sent the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Dana advised this is a training issue for employees to know what
email they can open or not.
Undersheriff Myers said someone needs to review those emails that are being reported suspicious emails, to
say ok to do business or IT does. Commissioner O'Brien asked Jim if he had someone in IT to review these
and they don't, per Jim. Greg Zempel mentioned no receipts come back to the employee and thought that IT
was looking at those as a secondary look and that is not happening. Jim said we can go back to removing
the "report suspicious email?" Commission O'Brien said he is ok with that, but to go back and require a few
more steps and then come back with a solution. Jim said he will work on that and it will need a vote by the
Board to remove that button from email.
Action taken: none
Discussion on deputy position — Did not discuss as there was no quorum.
No other business.
Meeting adj .edat 08:45 a.m.
Gene ana,
Paul Jewell, Chairman
