'Ac
rh ry rV f
4
E rirr4S co L+Nh"
MEMORANDUM
3H1XWWiWAL1s cnu1q7lrW
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
Mark Cook, PE Director
TO: Kittitas County Board of County Commissioners
FROM: Luke Huck P.E. County Engineer %syr
DATE: March 2, 2018
SUBJECT Yakima River Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon Event Application
After review of the application and letter dated February 13, 2018 for the proposed Yakima River
Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon Event. I have found that the Yakima River Canyon
Marathon committee addresses Traffic Control and safety on Public Roads under section three
and four of the aforementioned letter. Section three states the Yakima River Canyon Marathon
committee is working with the Yakima and Kittitas sheriff's departments, Yakima and Ellensburg
police departments, and WSDOT to provide a safe race. Section four states that only local area
residents, fisherman, volunteers and course officials will be permitted on State Highway 821
from 7:00 a.m, until 3:00 pm. And that passes will be issued to those who require access during
that time. Additionally it is identified that WSDOT will be working to assist in notification of the
closure to trucks and other traffic.
According to the map depicting the course, Canyon Rd, Berry Rd, Tjossem Rd, and Woodhouse
Loop will all be affected in conjunction with State Highway 821. Kittitas County Public Works will
require "Runners Ahead" signs to be placed at the intersections of these roadways to warn the
traveling public.
Additionally Public Works suggest the applicant be required to issue advanced notification of the
event in the Daily Record to prepare the traveling public for of the associated traffic impacts
created by this event.
I recommend approval of this event based on these conditions being upheld. Please feel free to
contact Kittitas County Public Works with any additional questions you may have at 509-962-
7523.
411 N.
