Other Reference Information <br />FHWA Manual for Selecting Safety Improvements on High Risk Rural Roads <br />When a vehicle leaves the traveled way and encounters a <br />pavement-shoulder drop-off, it can be difficult for the driver <br />to return safely to the roadway. A safety edge is a treatment <br />intended to minimize the severity of roadway or lane departure <br />crashes. With this treatment, the shoulder pavement edge is <br />sloped at an angle (30-35 degrees) to make it easier for a driver <br />to safely reenter the roadway after inadvertently driving onto <br />the shoulder.
