As a popular year-round recreation and resort
destination for visitors, Snoqualmie Pass experiences
significant seasonal and weekly variation in traffic
volumes and roadway conditions.
Winter is the peak season, drawing visitors for downhill skiing, snowshoeing,
and other snow-based activities. Attractions such as The Summit at
Snoqualmie offer alpine and Nordic skiing, mountain biking, winter tubing,
and scenic lift rides. On a busy winter day, both paid off-street parking
lots and free on-street parking supplies are highly utilized, which can lead
to significant pedestrian volumes as people travel between their cars and
destinations, sometimes leading to uncomfortable interactions with moving
vehicle traffic. In recent years, summer has also seen a surge in popularity,
drawing outdoor enthusiasts for hiking, mountain biking, and other warm-
weather pursuits. Adjacent to the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest,
the area supports hiking opportunities throughout the year. These hiking and
biking destinations can also result in significant demands for parking that
spills onto public roadways, which are not always designed to accommodate
this purpose, at least not at the demand levels that often occur.
Located at the I-90 crossing of the Cascade Mountains, the Snoqualmie Pass
area also serves as a major service center for through travelers, including
those driving large recreational vehicles and trucks. During winter storms,
the Pass can be a stopping point for traffic unable to travel further east.
These users, while temporary, impact how Snoqualmie Pass’s transportation
network functions.*
* An origin–destination analysis of travel to Snoqualmie Pass is provided in Appendix K.
16Kittitas County | Snoqualmie Pass Comprehensive Safety Plan
