REPLACEMENT AND REHABILITATION PLAN
Kittitas County's focus is to replace or rehabilitate bridges that are rated poor and/or weight restricted.
The current Six Year Transportation Improvement Plan includes the following bridge projects:
1. Replacement of Bridge no. 88273 Reecer Creek Road over Towne Ditch
Short Span bridges (Non-NBI) do not qualify for State or Federal funding assistance. These smaller
structures serve an important role in the County's transportation network. Short Span bridges are also
reviewed and recognized for their deficiency and need for repairs. The TIP also includes the following
project:
1. Replacement of Bridge no. 88154-OB Hungry Junction Road over the Cascade Canal
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS
Bridge maintenance and repairs are accomplished by a combination of County forces and contractors.
County crews are learning new techniques such as the noted expansion joint replacement projects that
took place in 2025. In addition, crews clean bridge decks, patch bridge decks, and replace bridge railing
as the needs arise. Contractors provide support with resources currently not available to county crews.
In 2025 Public works road crews performed multiple maintenance work orders that include installing new
grout in bridge deck joints, replacing failed expansion joints, replacing damaged and missing bridge rail
components, and trimming and removing brush and trees interfering with bridge elements and sight
distance issues.
Examples of more significant maintenance repairs include maintenance work completed at two bridges in
2022 using contracted forces that performed the following:
Through the inspection process, undermining was identified along the abutment for structure no. 89092-
OB. Public Works Road Crews worked to place material and armor the structure to prevent future scour.
Due to concerns about the structure, beginning in 2018 Public Works began monitoring bridge no. 87244-
OB. This monitoring involved collecting survey data on set points then comparing those to the baseline
year. This monitoring effort continued through 2021, with no significant movement observed. In 2022
Public Works worked with a contractor to place grout under the undermined abutment walls. The
placement of the fill slowed the erosion and degradation of the material and will extend the life of the
bridge. Additional monitoring was done and determined to discontinue after the repair.
Maintenance work orders are generated based on inspections performed. Work orders are prioritized by
Public Works staff. This information is then provided to Road Maintenance crews that perform the repairs.
Contracting construction services are also used to perform needed repairs.
Kittitas County 2025 Annual Bridge Report
