Mine hazard areas. <br />"Mine hazard areas" are areas underlain by abandoned mine shafts, secondary passages between shaft <br />tunnels, or air vents. Mine hazards include subsidence, which is the uneven downward movement of the <br />ground surface caused by underground workings caving in; contamination to ground and surface water from <br />tailings and underground workings; concentrations oflethal or noxious gases; and underground fires. Mining. <br />"Mining" means the removal of sand, gravel, soil, minerals, and other earth materials for commercial and <br />other uses. <br />(Ord.2021-076,2021) <br />$ 17A.02.500. Mitigation sequencing. <br />"Mitigation sequencing" means a process used to guide mitigation decisions and determine the type and <br />level of mitigation required. It follows a three (3) step process, described in I 7A.0 I . 1 00: <br />l. Avoiding the impact altogether by not taking a certain action or parts of an action; <br />2. Minimizing impacts by limiting the degree or magnitude of the action and its implementation, <br />by using appropriate technology, or by taking affirmative steps to avoid or reduce impacts; <br />3. Rectifying the impact by repairing, rehabilitating, or restoring the affected environment; <br />4. Reducing or eliminating the impact over time by preservation and maintenance operations <br />during the life of the action; <br />5. Compensating for the impact by replacing, enhancing, or providing substitute resources or <br />environments; and/or <br />6. Monitoring the impact and taking appropriate corrective measures. <br />(Ord.2021-016,2021) <br />S 17A.02.510.
