Wildfires can severely affect the water quality due to soil erosion, increased
flooding, and the flow of debris with potential contaminants.-24e Additionally, wildfire smoke and ash can
travel miles and affect communities that are not directly impacted by the wildfires and reduce air quality
to unhealthy levels. The population exposed to wildfire smoke and ash can experience eyes, nose, throat,
and lung irritation, and it can make it hard to breath. Additionally, these conditions can impair visibility on
roads and have the potential to cause vehicle and maritime accidents.
Smoke and air pollution from wildfires that are occurring within or outside of the Country can result in
severe health hazards, especially for sensitive populations, including children, the elderly, and those with
respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Smoke generated by wildfire consists of visible and invisible
emissions that contain particulate matter (e.9., soot, tar, water vapor, and minerals), gases (e.9., carbon
24e United States Environmental Protection Agency.
