2025 Hazard Mitigation Plan
Kittitas County, Washington

Chapter 4: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment 163
• The probability of occurrence for strong winds/damaging winds in Kittitas County is high because
significant occurrences of this hazard occur annually throughout the County.
• The probability of occurrence for thunderstorms, cold wave/extreme cold, and heat wave/extreme
heat is medium because significant occurrences of these hazards have occasionally impacted
the County and will likely occur again within 25 years.
• The probability of occurrence for hail and tornadoes is low because a significant occurrence of
these hazards is likely to occur within 100 years.
The hail annualized frequency value represents the average number of recorded hail hazard
occurrences, in event days, per year over the period of record (34 years). Table 4-104 outlines the
annualized frequency for hail, based on FEMA NRI data, for Kittitas County.
Table 4-104. Hail Annualized Frequency (FEMA National Risk Index)
Location Events on Record
(1986 – 2021) Annualized Frequency
Kittitas County 3 0.1 events per year
Annualized frequency is defined as the expected frequency or probability of a hazard occurrence per year.

The strong wind annualized frequency value represents the average number of recorded strong wind
hazard occurrences, in event days, per year over the period of record (34 years). Table 4-105 outlines
the annualized frequency for strong winds, based on FEMA NRI data, for Kittitas County.
Table 4-105.
