2025 Hazard Mitigation Plan
Kittitas County, Washington

Chapter 4: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment 114
Figure 4-14. USGS National Seismic Hazard Map

The earthquake annualized frequency value represents the modeled frequency of an earthquake hazard
occurrence per year. A higher annualized frequency value results in higher EAL and Risk Index scores.
Table 4-52 outlines the annualized frequency for earthquakes, based on FEMA NRI data, for Kittitas
County.
Table 4-52. Earthquake Annualized Frequency (FEMA National Risk Index)
Location Events on Record
(2021 Dataset) Annualized Frequency
Kittitas County N/A 0.287% chance per year
Annualized frequency is defined as the expected frequency or probability of a hazard occurrence per year.
4.6.4.5. Past Events
Washington, especially the Puget Sound basin, has a history of frequent earthquakes. According to the
DNR, earthquakes occur almost every day throughout the State. However, most are too small to be felt
or cause damage. Larger magnitude earthquakes, which result in damage, occur less frequently.142F
142 More

142 Washington State Department of Natural Resources. (n.d.). Earthquakes and Faults.
