Understand the threats and hazards in their locales <br />o Acquire an awareness of potential threats and hazards through <br />sources such as news outlets, local emergency management <br />agencies, public information and warning systems, community <br />educationcaTs-li:ffi <br />,^i:i#11!T,1l3l;1i:TI8Jff iTfi i:' <br />knowledge <br />Mitigation <br />Mitigation begins with individual awareness and action; informed decisions <br />facilitate actions that reduce risk and enable individuals, families, and <br />households to better withstand, absorb, or adapt to the impacts of threats and <br />hazards and quickly recover from future incidents. Homeowners who have <br />adequate hazard and flood insurance coverage and take steps to protect their <br />property from hazards common to their area, reduce the impacts of an incident <br />and are less reliant on external assistance to repair or rebuild their homes. <br />. Stay aware of and participate in disaster preparedness efforts in their <br />community <br />o Become aware of planning efforts regarding floodplain management, building <br />codes, and land use and environmental regulations. Take actions and the basic steps to prepare themselves for emergencies <br />o Reduce hazards in and around their homes through efforts such <br />as raising utilities above flood level or securing unanchored <br />objects against the threat of hig h winds <br />Response <br />. Prepare to take care of themselves and their neighbors until assistance <br />arrives o Preparedness should account for a minimum of three days (72 <br />hours)o Due to the unique catastrophic hazard profile in the State of <br />. Washington, EMD recommends striving to prepare for 14 days <br />. Monitor emergency communications and follow guidance and instructions <br />provided by local authorities <br />Recovery <br />o After suffering losses, survivors can: <br />o Maximize any benefits from insurance coverage; and <br />o Pursue additional funding through any available personal or loan- <br />based resources; and <br />o Apply for local, regional/metropolitan, state, tribal, territorial, <br />i ns u I a r <br />ilff; li Jiffi:i f#Y:?Li:'JiJ:'ce <br />that m av be ava i I abre <br />. Ensure they follow up on agency requests; and <br />. Gain full understanding of program processes; and. Express any unmet needs <br />.
