Ryegrass Limited Purpose Landfill and Balefill Closed Landfill
Groundwater and Leachate Sampling and Analysis Plan
Sa[titas County Solid Waste
bubbles. If bubbles are consistently present, discard the vial and replace with a new unused
container.
Table 3 shows sample bottle requirements and preservatives. The analytical laboratory will provide
the sample containers and necessary preservation.
2.1.2 Field Filtering
Samples collected for dissolved constituent analysis will be filtered through a 0.45-micron filter. The
filters will attach directly to the discharge tube of the sampling pump. The filter must be changed
between sample points, or more frequently if clogging occurs.
Where in -line filtration is not possible, prefiltration bottles may be used to collect the samples.
Unpreserved prefiltration bottles must be obtained from the laboratory with the sample coolers and
identified with the bottle request. Prefiltratlon bottles, used for vacuum or pressure filtering, will not
be used for more than one well. Prefiltration bottles must be unpreserved, as any acid preservative
will extract total metals and invalidate the dissolved metals results. The use of prefiltration bottles
must be noted on the Chain -of -Custody form in the comments section. Samples that have been field -
filtered must be noted on the Chain -of -Custody forms in the comments section. The laboratory will
note which samples require fi lering on the indiOdual bottle labels,
Samples from the springs will not be field filtered.
2.1.3 Leachate Sampling
The Balefill Landfill includes a leachate collection and treatment system where leachate from two
topographical low areas are routed to a pump station and pumped to two lined leachate evaporation
lagoons. Leachate pump totalizer readings are reported in gallons and tracked by Klttitas County
staff
Leachate sampling will be complete from the leachate pump system of the Balefill Landfill on an
annual basis during the first quarter events and analytes should be identical to the groundwater
quality parameters for the Balefill Landfill. Leachate samples will be collected with a peristaltic pump
and new polyethylene tubing.
The LPL does not have a leachate management system as it is an unlined facility.
Occasionally, leachate sampling may be necessary if water is present in the underdrain of the lined
leachate lagoons. These samples will be similarly collected with a peristaltic pump and new
polyethylene tubing or a new polyethylene bailer.
2.2 Field Measurements
2.2.1 Static Water Level Measurements
Water levels at each of the monitoring wells will be measured prior to the start of purging in order to
monitor changes in seasonal or long-term water elevations and groundwater flow directionsEach of
the monitoring wells will he allowed to equilibrate with atmosphefic pressure prior to recording the
static water level measurement. The static water levels will be used to produce the groundwater
contour map for each quarter,
April 2024 1553.1763.010 2-2
P.avised May 2024
