Executive Summary
The Kittitas County Road Safety Plan 2025 is a continuation of a biennial road safety plan program created
to reduce collisions within the County Road network. Following the Washington State Department of
Transportation's (WSDOT) Highway Safety lmprovement Plan (HSIP) grant application methodology for
creating a prioritized road safety plan, crash data analysis in combination with staff identification of certain
roadway characteristics throughout the County Road network, a list of prioritized projects implementing
various countermeasures was created. These projects were further prioritized with engineering judgement
using considerations such as estimated project cost, feasibility, and improvement timing, Total project costs
were also determined, accumulated, and if needed, broken down in phases to be completed as funding
opportunity allows,
Priority One - Kittitas Hiqhway and No. 6 Road Intersection lmprovement Planninq and
lmplementation
a
a
o
Kittitas County has been working continuously to improve the intersection with minor improvement
projects. However, this road segment continues to score the highest in the County due to the
number of injury and non-injury collisions. The project is proposed in two phases, the first for
planning and research from an independent consultant, and second for implementation of a project
to reduce the accident rate and severity of accidents, along with improving visibility, pedestrian and
bicycle safety,
Priority Two - Corridor lmprovements Countywide
Corridors have been identified Countywide based on roadway segment crash data, along with the
practicality of possible roadway countermeasure implementation, The pgect aims to design,
develop and implement a system of embedded LED markers, roadway edgeline rumble strips
and/or carsonite delineation markers to enhance visibility, safety and reduce run-off the road
accidents.
Prioritv Three - Huntzinqer Road Safety lmprovements Phase 2 - MP 2.70
This is the final phase of safety improvements to complete the Huntzinger Road corridor. The
project has been broken down into phases to allow for cost effective incremental improvements,
The project will add guardrail, delineation, and upgrade roadway signs along this stretch of
Huntzinger Road.
Prioritv Four - Denmark Road Safety lmprovements
Denmark Road MP 0.50 - MP 4,35 has been noted and included in previous safety plans since
2017. This roadway has five structures/bridges that have deficient or no bridge rail. This project
would provide safety countermeasures to the entire Denmark Road corridor.
3
