Priority 1: Kittitas Highway and No. 6 Road Intersection Improvement Planning and
Implementation
a. Planning
b. Implementation
Kittitas County has been working continuously to improve the intersection with minor improvement projects.
These minor improvement projects have included the addition of LED lit Stop, Stop Ahead and Intersection
Ahead signage, installation of painted Stop Bars, and removal of vegetation to improve sight distance. The
implementation of these projects may have resulted in slight improvements, however the intersection and
road segment continues to have a high accident rate, and there is a need to explore major improvements to
the intersection. Based on the minimum safety plan rating criteria, this road segment of Kittitas Highway
continues to score the highest in the County, mainly due to the number of injury accidents and with a total
number of collisions from 2019-2023 at 25.
A planning grant would allow the County to solicit an independent consultant to explore improvements at
this intersection. Specific improvements to be analyzed include:
• Traffic signal installation.
• Widening lanes or adding turning lanes.
• Construction of a roundabout.
• Improvements to pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.
These options need to be analyzed at multiple levels to inform the County of the potential cost -benefit ratio
of each. Additionally, a realistic budget and timeline for each option, along with Right of Way acquisition
needs will be established.
Through this analysis the County plans to implement a project that will reduce the accident rate and
severity of accidents, along with improving visibility, pedestrian and bicycle safety.
13
