Page 1 of 1 <br />Information Technology “Study Session Staff Report”, 12/23/24 <br />KITTITAS COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />STAFF REPORT FOR <br />STUDY SESSION <br /> <br />Information Technology <br /> <br />STUDY SESSION DATE: 12/23/2024 <br /> <br />TOPIC: Renewal for VMware vSphere Foundation 8 <br /> <br />ACTION REQUESTED: Request to Approve the Renewal <br /> <br />LEAD STAFF: Assistant IT Director Zane Kinney & Network Sys Admin Bill Davis <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION: The IT department is recommending that the Commissioners <br />approve the renewal of the 3-year plan with VMware vSphere Foundation 8. <br /> <br />BRIEFING SUMMARY: VMware vSphere was recently acquired by Broadcom this year <br />who changed the licensing structure and increased prices. The contract is between Kittitas <br />County and Ivoxy Consulting, LLC, our chosen vendor for this product line. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION: VMware vSphere Foundation 8 Subscription is industry standard <br />virtualization software. It is the platform that all our servers run on and have for the last <br />12 years with proven stability. It allows many services/servers to run on a select few <br />pieces of powerful hardware. Without this infrastructure, we would need dedicated <br />hardware to be purchased for every County run service, as well as a completely new <br />backup system. The costs could be in the multi-millions and far less reliable. With this <br />infrastructure, we save tremendous costs on hardware and gain high availability of our <br />applications as well as the ability to use secure, immutable backup and recovery options <br />(Rubrik).
