spokesperson, so the media are apt to seek information from anyone wearing <br />identification. <br />When approached by the media: <br />• Respond courteously and cooperate, if possible. <br />• Get the reporter's name, station or newspaper, phone number, their requests <br />for information and any deadline. Give this information to the Shelter Manager <br />immediately and let the reporter know they will get a call back from the <br />appropriate person. Pictures are not allowed. <br />S. Weapons, Drugs, and Alcohol <br />Weapons, drugs and alcohol are not allowed to be carried by anybody in the shelter. If <br />a volunteer notices that a guest has a prohibited item tell the guest that those items <br />are not permitted. They may put the item in their personal belongings tote where it <br />will stay locked up until morning checkout. If they refuse or become belligerent, ask <br />the guest to leave. If you have further problems, call 911. <br />Remember, we are not a law enforcement agency, so you do not have the right to try <br />and confiscate a weapon. Trying to take a weapon from a guest could put you in <br />serious danger. <br />Here is a list of just some of the items that are considered weapons: <br />• Ammunition, Bullets and Bullet Clips <br />• Baseball Bats, Clubs and Batons <br />• Chains <br />• Brass knuckles <br />• Guns or Knives of any type <br />■ Hatchets <br />• Martial Arts Devices - Throwing Stars, Swords, etc. <br />Note: Volunteers are not permitted to carry firearms, or any weapon while at the <br />shelter, even if you have a permit to do so outside of the shelter! <br />If a guest arrives at the shelter with indications that they are under the influence of <br />drugs and/or alcohol, they may still be allowed into the shelter. Note that many <br />substances take time to take full effect, but as long as a guest is following general <br />shelter rules, they may stay. <br />
