d -
RESEARCH
affiliations and voting history, although independent voters are more likely to respond with "don't
know" (31 %).
Thinking about specific activities related to road and bridge maintenance, voters place high value on
bridge safety, snow plowing, and road maintenance and resurfacing. Snow plowing is particularly
important with over 6 in 10 saying it is very important. When participants were asked to list the most
important services they receive from the local county government in the focus groups, snow plowing
was among the most frequently listed services, behind only fire and police services.
Importance of County Road Maintenance Functions
very important Not at all important
Bridge safety Very few
"don't know"
Snowplowing
Road maintenance and ,
resurfacing
Preventing flooding on
roads
Improving traffic safety
Addressing traffic
congestion
Maintaining sidewalks ,
and paths
When gauging priority levels for different road and bridge maintenance activities across key
demographics, priority ratings are fairly consistent, but vary in a few demographic areas. Opinions vary
most by age. Voters ages 45 and older are more likely to rate "bridge safety" as important than those
between ages 30-44. Additionally, those 65 and older are more likely to prioritize "addressing traffic
congestion," as do those ages 18-29, as well as "improving traffic safety." Voters ages 18-29 are most
likely to rate "maintaining sidewalks and paths" as important.
There is little variance by political affiliation, but independent voters are notably less likelyto rate
"improving traffic safety" as important than their partisan counterparts. There are no significant
differences in total "important" ratings between Upper County and Lower County voters.
7 1 DHM Research I Consor Kittitas County Public Works Survey I May 2024
