KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
2024 STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: Apri122, 2024
TOPIC: Kittitas Highway at No. 6 Road
ACTION REQUESTED: Direct Staff
LEAD STAFF:
Josh Fredrickson
RECOMMENDATION:
Direct staff to proceed with development of alternatives at the intersection of Kittitas
Highway at No. 6 Road.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• LED embedded signs have been installed at the intersection of Kittitas Highway
at No. 6 Road.
• Proceeding with voluntary measures at the intersection.
• Additional alternatives are being considered including capital improvements.
BACKGROUND:
As part of the 2023 County Intersection Corridor Safety Improvement project new
intersection signs were installed at Kittitas Highway and No. 6 Road. This project
included new stop ahead, intersection ahead and LED embedded stop signs. PW
continues to monitor the intersection of Kittitas Highway at Number 6 Road for possible
work items which may be considered.
DISCUSSION:
Development of work items include consideration of maintenance activities and capital
improvements. PW continues to work with adjacent property owners on voluntary
measures at the intersection. This includes the relocation of a hedge on the north side of
Kittitas Highway and a fence on the south side of the road. The fence is located within
the county road right-of-way. In addition to voluntary measures, work items such as stop
bars and capital projects may be considered.
Capital improvements, such as turn lanes or roundabouts will be contingent on successful
application for grant funding. This intersection may be considered for placement on the
Safety Plan and the Six Year Transportation Plan, as those plans are updated. The
existing right-of-way on each leg of the intersection is 60-feet. Acquisition of additional
right-of-way may be voluntary or result in a condemnation process.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Roadside maintenance is budgeted annually in the Public Works Road Fund.
ATTACHMENTS:
None.
Public Works "Work Session Staff Report", 2024
