KITTITAS COUNTY <br />DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS <br />PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />2024 STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT <br />STUDY SESSION DATE: Apri122, 2024 <br />TOPIC: Kittitas Highway at No. 6 Road <br />ACTION REQUESTED: Direct Staff <br />LEAD STAFF: <br />Josh Fredrickson <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Direct staff to proceed with development of alternatives at the intersection of Kittitas <br />Highway at No. 6 Road. <br />BRIEFING SUMMARY: <br />• LED embedded signs have been installed at the intersection of Kittitas Highway <br />at No. 6 Road. <br />• Proceeding with voluntary measures at the intersection. <br />• Additional alternatives are being considered including capital improvements. <br />BACKGROUND: <br />As part of the 2023 County Intersection Corridor Safety Improvement project new <br />intersection signs were installed at Kittitas Highway and No. 6 Road. This project <br />included new stop ahead, intersection ahead and LED embedded stop signs. PW <br />continues to monitor the intersection of Kittitas Highway at Number 6 Road for possible <br />work items which may be considered. <br />DISCUSSION: <br />Development of work items include consideration of maintenance activities and capital <br />improvements. PW continues to work with adjacent property owners on voluntary <br />measures at the intersection. This includes the relocation of a hedge on the north side of <br />Kittitas Highway and a fence on the south side of the road. The fence is located within <br />the county road right-of-way. In addition to voluntary measures, work items such as stop <br />bars and capital projects may be considered. <br />Capital improvements, such as turn lanes or roundabouts will be contingent on successful <br />application for grant funding. This intersection may be considered for placement on the <br />Safety Plan and the Six Year Transportation Plan, as those plans are updated. The <br />existing right-of-way on each leg of the intersection is 60-feet. Acquisition of additional <br />right-of-way may be voluntary or result in a condemnation process. <br />FISCAL IMPACTS: <br />Roadside maintenance is budgeted annually in the Public Works Road Fund. <br />ATTACHMENTS: <br />None. <br />Page 1 of 1 <br />Public Works "Work Session Staff Report", 2024 <br />
