Cook <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Support staff efforts complementing Washington State Department of Transportation <br />emergency closure plan for Interstate 90. <br />BRIEFING SUMMARY: <br />• Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is finalizing the bidding <br />process supporting repairs to the Interstate 90 (I 90) Bridge at Vantage. <br />o Given the repair duration (estimated currently at three years) staff are working with <br />WSDOT developing an emergency closure plan for 190 and associated impacted <br />local roadways in Kittitas County. <br />• County Engineer Fredrickson and Director Cook are participating in a tabletop <br />exercise with WSDOT and law enforcement in Wenatchee on October 26, 2023. <br />• Staff will continue updating the Board of County Commissioners as we move <br />through the process with WSDOT. <br />BACKGROUND: <br />The 190 Vantage Bridge has been deteriorating for several years and requires full deck <br />replacement. Preliminary impacts to 190 traffic have suggested three years will be likely <br />supporting the repairs. The schedule will be finalized once the bid award and final contract <br />negations conclude. <br />DISCUSSION: <br />It is likely that WSDOT will close eastbound access at Exit 115 (Kittitas) during <br />emergencies. We will need to follow that closure at Vantage Highway, or it is likely that <br />traffic will cycle onto Vantage Highway and load up at the Vantage interchange. Staff is <br />hoping the October 26' tabletop exercise in Wenatchee will shed additional light on <br />necessary road closures.
