Sports Tourism: Target Audiences, Messages <br />Primary Audiences <br />' Leaders of sports leagues and organizations in Washington state <br />' coaches, identified through wlAA and other certification programs <br />o SchoolAthletic Directors <br />r sports tournament and sporting event organizers (runs, cycling events, etc.) <br />E Sports camp organizers <br />Secondary Audiences <br />' Fa milies of youth athletes <br />. Adult amateur athletes <br />' Event organizers for lesser-known sports or activities that can nrake use of the fields or other <br />venues/ including equestrian facilities <br />: lndividua{s who hunt and fish <br />Which Sports to Target? <br />Ellensburg currently has underutilized fields in Rotary Park, The first priority will be to target sports <br />that utilize those fields including baseball, softballand soccer. Sports like lacrosse could also be good <br />opportunities for open soccer fields. Targeting must take into account the current capacity of fields <br />and their competitiveness in attracting out-of-town sports visitors. A forrnal audit byihe parks & <br />Recreation Department or an outside sports consultant can provide more detailed analysis to <br />determ ine sport "ma rket readiness." <br />Ellensburg also has significant natural resources for running and cycling enthusiasts including trails, <br />country roads and waterways-allof which are relatively free of traffic and offer beautiful <br />surroundings. The disc golf course offers opportunities for play if not for full tournanrents. The Kittitas <br />County Event Center offers facilities for equestrian events (assuming the Bloom pavilion opens late <br />spring 2019). <br />The greater Ellensburg area offers up blue-ribbon fly fishing, as well as upland bird and large game <br />hunting' While this is a smaller audience who tends to camp, Ellensburg offers a base camp for <br />supplies and entertainment. <br />Sports Tourism Key Messages <br />* Ellensburg is close to home, in the center of Washington <br />* lt's a relaxing place where we make it easy to hold your event <br />I There's always something to do in Ellensburg (from the historic downtown to outdoor <br />adventure). lt's a fun and safe place for teams and their families outside of the competition. <br />r lt has easy access to exceptional open space, world-class fishing and upland bird and large game <br />hunting. <br />City of €llensburg <br />Five-Year^ Tourism Stra !.egic Fla rr <br />20 19 41,
