PRESS RELEASE
Date: August 14, 2023
Contact: Arden Thomas, Water Resources Program Coordinator, 509-962-7523
KITTITAS COUNTY RESIDENTS URGED TO CONSERVE WATER
On July 241, 2023, the Department of Ecology declared drought in parts of 12 counties, including the
Yakima Basin portion of Kittitas County. This drought declaration recognizes that early snowmelt, a lack
of spring rain, and low stream flows are creating hardships for agricultural uses and natural ecosystems.
Pro -ratable water users within our community are receiving 72% of their water allotments, junior water
users have been curtailed, and instream flows are critically low. Water is a scarce and valuable resource
for our community and residents are asked to conserve water.
Kittitas County has secured water rights to provide the legal backing of junior groundwater uses
associated with small-scale individual well use. Due to this work, residents relying on these types of wells
to provide indoor domestic water have improved water security even during times of drought. This
protection is limited to indoor domestic uses and irrigation of up to 500 square feet of exterior yard.
All County residents are urged to conserve our critical groundwater resources particularly during this
declared drought period. Important steps we can take to conserve water include:
Utilize efficient irrigation methods;
• Identify and fix leaks in your plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems;
• Wait until you have a full load before running the dishwater or washing machine;
• Consider installing low flow fixtures.
Utilizing native plants and plants adapted to our local climatic conditions is one tool we can use to
conserve water over the long term. The Heritage Garden Program is a local initiative that promotes the
use of native plants especially those of cultural significance; promotes low water use landscaping &
efficient irrigation methods; and educates our community about the history and biodiversity of the
Columbia River Basin. More information about Heritage Garden Program is available online at
www.h cd.info or through the Kittitas County Conservation District https://www.kccd.net/herit
arg dens.
Kittitas County is working with Yakima Basin Integrated Plan partners to improve water reliability
through wide -spread adoption of water conservation measures, construction of new ground and surface
water storge, habitat and watershed protection and restoration, and market re -allocation.
