=IE
From: Cyndy Smith-Kuebel
1321 Thomas load, Ellensburg, WA 98925
509.899.3015
December 29, 2022
To: Mark Cook
Director of Kittitas County Public Works
411 N Ruby ST, Suite 1
Ellensburg WA 98926
Dear Mr. Cook.
't
ks
V5
a s
I live on Thomas Road, which is approximately 10 miles north of Ellensburg. I moved to
1321 Thomas Road in 1989 before the road surface was even paved. Due to the extensive
riparian forest and numerous creeks in the Thomas Road area between Wilson Creek Road
and Naneum Road, there is a resident herd of deer, who's herd existence predates the
neighborhood itself. These deer are frequently in the road, as they make their daily
movements throughout the Thomas Road neighborhood.
Fast forward to 2022/2023. Thomas Road has a faster paved road surface, there is a closed
through -road below us (Bar 14), a party barn above us on Chariton Road, and an
increasingly popular Naneum State Forest access just north of Thomas Road. These factors
have converged to cause increased traffic on Thomas Road, and people driving way too
fast. If the current kill rate of the resident deer herd is indicative, Thomas Road has gone
from a quiet neighborhood road to a kill zone. There have been 6 deer killed that I have
observed along an 854 yard stretch of Thomas Road since August 2422. This level of deer
death also means there is increased danger for dog walkers, kids, other non -motorized
users, and even for the speeding drivers on Thomas Road.
Thomas Road has poor visibility due to curves and the riparian forest, and there is no
posted speed, except for on the curves. For the safety of the neighborhood residents. the
wildlife, and drivers, we in the Thomas Road neighborhood are requesting that a) the speed
be reduced from the current 50 MPH to 35 MPH from Wilson Creek Road to Naneum Road;
b) the new speed limit be posted at the straight stretches starting at Wilson Creek Road on
the west end, and Naneum Road on the east end. If you have any questions, please call
Cyndy Kuebel at 509.899.3015
Thank you for your consideration,
i< 0-,!
U " i k.
