WDFW Stevens Road Elk Fence Construction
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is working with Kittitas Reclamation District (KRD)
to install elk control fencing along their canal Right of Way (ROW) on the North Branch Canal from where
Stevens Road crosses the canal south to Interstate -90 (1-90). Future construction will continue the
fencing north of Stevens Road to Vantage Hwy.
In the vicinity of 1-90 the elk fence will leave the canal ROW and follow an existing access road and then
follow Stevens Rd terminating at the Steven's Road Underpass of 1-90. This fence alignment will better
prevent elk access to 1-90. There is an existing stock fence in the Kittitas County ROW of Stevens Rd.
WDFW will replace the stock fence with 8' woven wire elk control fencing. Existing gates and water
crossings will be maintained in their current location.
The purpose of the fencing is to control elk access and damage to private agricultural land in the area.
See attached maps (Figures 1 and 2) for elk fence location. Fence construction will begin in parcel
653936. According to Compass most of the construction will not be within a numbered parcel so
ownership is unknown but is likely Federal. Concurrently with this proposal WDFW is seeking approval
from Washington State DOT to construct within the 1-90 ROW.
Construction is planned for spring of 2023 and will be completed by contractors hired by KRD. Following
construction WDFW staff will annually maintain the elk control fencing. See attached drawing (Figure 3)
of fence specs. Full details of fence standards can be provided.
