PRESS RELEASE
Date: October 10, 2022
Contact: Arden Thomas, Water Resources Program Coordinator, 509-962-7690
lUttitas County Continues to Prepare for Emergencies and Calls on Residents
to Also Prepare.
Kittitas County continues to plan and invest to make our communities more resilient to natural
hazards such as wildfire, flood, and drought.
To address wildfire risks, Kittitas County is working in partnership with local fire districts and
the conservation district to obtain funding for fuels reduction work. The Washington Department
of Natural Resources has led planning efforts for these initiatives, with participation by the
Kittitas County Fire Chief s Association, Kittitas Fire Adapted Communities Coalition and
others. County landowners are encouraged to learn more about resources available through the
Kittitas Fire Adapted Communities Coalition by visiting their website at:
www.kittitasfirereadv.org.
A wet and cool spring resulted in high Yakima River flows in June and associated flooding of
low-lying areas. These conditions provide a reminder that flooding occurs frequently in some
locations. The Flood Control Zone District is currently conducting a flood risk assessment of the
Yakima River downstream of Easton. This area was selected because it includes some of our
most flood -impacted communities.
Additional information about specific actions the County has taken is available in the 2022
Progress Report available on the Kittitas County's Hazard Mitigation Website
(https://www.co.kittitas wa.us/public-works/hazard-mitigation-plan ).Kittitas County previously
adopted the 2019 Kittitas County Multi -Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, which addresses
natural hazards such as floods, wildfire, avalanches, drought, earthquakes, and landslides.
As Kittitas County works to make our community more resilient to natural disasters, we also call
on our residents to prepare your home and family for a disaster. More information is available at
the www.ready.gov/plan website. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for alerts through the
Kittitas County Emergency Management Alerts (Everbridge) system. When the Kittitas County
Sheriff s office issues notifications about potential safety hazard or situation involving locations
identified at registration, system users will be notified. To learn more and sign up for these
notifications, visit: https://member.everbridge.net/index/337829242601599
For more information, please contact the Kittitas County Public Works at 509-962-7523.
Efli
