APPENDIX II: PRELIMINARY AIRPORT ASSESSMENT <br />APPENDIX <br /> <br />Airport Strategic Business Plan, 07/26/2021 47 <br />The NPIAS airport service level categories are as follows: <br /> Primary Service/Commercial Service Airports (396 airports as of 2020) have <br />scheduled air carrier service for at least 10,000 enplaned passengers per year. <br /> Non-Primary/Commercial Service Airports (123 airports as of 2020) have <br />scheduled air carrier service for 2,500 to 9,999 enplaned passengers per year. <br /> Non-Primary/General Aviation Airports (2,535 airports as of 2020) have no <br />scheduled air carrier service or scheduled air carrier service for less than 2,500 <br />enplaned passengers per year. <br /> Non-Primary/Reliever Airports (250 airports as of 2020) relieve congestion at <br />designated Primary Service Airports by redirecting general aviation aircraft <br />operations from the Primary Service Airports. <br />While 75% of major airline flights operate out of less than 65 major metropolitan airports <br />and 99.83% of total commercial service passenger enplanements occur at 380 airports <br />(out of 506 US airports certified for scheduled airline service) – these airports are also <br />used by General Aviation. In contrast, there are 19,627 public and private use landing <br />facilities in the US that are used by General Aviation of which about 5,080 airports are <br />available for public use. Of the 5,080 public-use airports20, the FAA’s most recent NPIAS <br />identifies 3,310 existing airports (and 6 additional proposed airports) that are important to <br />national air transportation and therefore eligible to receive grants under the FAA Airport <br />Improvement Program (AIP). <br />Figure10: NPIAS Overview   <br /> <br />20 The word “airport” includes landing areas developed for conventional fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, <br />and seaplanes.
