New hydraulic modeling was conducted for a portion
of the Yakima River and selected tributaries. This map modernization process also
includes the development of digital map products, which are easier to use and more
accurate than paper maps.
FEMA initiated public outreach for the map modernization effort in 2010 and there have
been opportunities for public comment in 2010, 2014 and 2016. After preliminary maps
were provided in 2017, there were public meetings and a formal appeal period that ended
in April 2018.
DISCUSSION:
Outreach regarding these new maps and the timeline for use is particularly important
given FEMA's delay in finalizing the maps after 2018 public meetings. The County is
required to update its flood control Ordinance prior to September 24, 2021.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Outreach is budgeted annually in the Flood Control Zone District annual work program.
ATTACHMENTS:
Exhibit 1: Press Release
Exhibit 2: Example Informational Handout
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
