KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: February 22, 2021
TOPIC: Mountains to Sound Greenway 2020 Annual Report
ACTION REQUESTED: Direct Staff
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Identify the extent of County involvement in the Mountains to Sound Greenway
Cooperative Management Plan formulation process.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• Pending amendment to the 2016 Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan,
contemplate tourism activities being led by others in the County and not directly
by Kittitas County.
• Recreational groups are working on numerous initiatives likely impacting County
resources at some level.
Mountains to Sound Greenway 2020 goal number 5: "Promoting responsible
tourism and sustainable economic opportunities", appears to be an activity
consistent with County Recreation and Tourism Plan implementation.
BACKGROUND:
The 2016 PROS plan did not incorporate the 2016 Tourism Plan. The Tourism Plan was
not adopted by the Board of County Commissioners. Recent increased recreational
pressures throughout the County as a whole are being acknowledged by numerous special
interest groups. The Board of Commissioners have not articulated the Board's tourism
implementation strategy.
DISCUSSION:
The pending revisions to the 2016 PROS plan are expected to provide direction and
predictability responding to emerging tourism opportunities in the County. One such
opportunity may be involvement in the development of the 2020 Mountains to Sound
Greenway Cooperative Management Plan for Greenway initiatives. A portion of the
Greenway's 2020 Annual Report appears below for Commissioner consideration (See
Goal number 5):
Public Works "Work Session Staff Report", 2021
