J <br />7 <br />r <br />W <br />LIMING IN KITTITAS COUNTY'S FLOODPLAINS <br />FEMA is updating flood maps <br />throughout Kittitas County based on <br />new data about flood hazards. <br />FLOOD MAP BASICS. <br />The Federal Emergency Management Agency <br />(FEMA] coordinates disaster response. <br />The National Flouu insurance Program (NFIP) <br />provides flood insurance to property owners as <br />well as education and assistance to lessen flood <br />damage in flood -prone areas. A FIRM will generally show: <br />Flood Insurance Rate Maps fFIRM,' are maps . a community's base flood elevations, <br />created by FEMA and used by the NFIP for flood- <br />plain management, mitigation, and insurance pur- ' flood zones, and <br />poses. 0 floodplain boundaries. <br />Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs show Base Flood Elevations (BFEs) are the low - <br />where flooding has a one percent chance of hap- est height that floodwaters can be expected , <br />pening in any given year to reach during a major flood. <br />
