Frequently, 3-D printers, manual tools, <br />and classroom spaces are associated with makerspaces <br />Such spaces take very little upfit to make them function, but the key would be flexible space for <br />many office type configurations and excellent intemet access. The Kittitas County Chamber of <br />Commerce is cunently working on one co-working space on N. Pearl Skeet in the old Red Cross <br />office building. Ultirnately, multiple spaces could be developed that could take on multiple <br />partnerships and even focus on pafiicular professional collaborations (such as artists studios or <br />architectural and engineering offices) so the community should be prepared to engage in a <br />discussion with others on the endeavor. The goal is to have flexible spaces to cultivate <br />entrepreneurial growth in the heart of downtown Ellensburg. <br />4.1.5 Continue ongoing recruitment and_retention of rctail. <br />The retail analysis clearly indicates that there is sufficient demand for additional specialty retail <br />and the expansion of existing retail in Ellensburg. The community should consider subdividing <br />spaces for a "small store" concept. Pascagoula, Mississippi used seventeen prefabricated <br />"Katrina Cottages" as a retail accelerator. Over 30 applicants applied for the spaces, and, after <br />five years of operation, four original tenants have moved on to larger spaces in the downtown. <br />From a recruitment standpoint, the best prospects are l. Expansion of existing stores; 2. <br />Specialty stores in neighboring communities looking for expansion opportunities in Ellensburg; <br />3. People who may have relocated to Ellensburg with retail experience. <br />The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce sponsors a business plan competition in conjunction <br />with Yakimq which could be expanded and targeted to retaiUrestaurant use in downtown <br />Ellensburg. Cenhal Washington University may consider partnering with the Ellensburg <br />Downtown Association and the Chamber of Commerce for such an expanded business plan <br />program. <br />4.1.6 Explore realignment offarmers' market. <br />Ellensburg should explore the prospect of realigning the farmer's market to the market vendors <br />face out toward the street. By doing this, emergency equipment can get by and also allows the <br />market to reinforce existing retailers. This could be launched on an experimental basis to see <br />which configuration works best. <br />30
