potholes and eliminates dust emission. Approximately 20 miles of county gravel
roadway axe currently base stabilized annually.
DISCUSSIO;hr:
The practice of base stabilization is cost effective, provides and improved running surface
for roadway users and significantly eliminates dust emission. PW desires expanding the
use of base stabilization of its remaining gravel roads during the 2018 construction
season.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Currently, PW is spending approximately $5,500 per mile to base stabilize its gravel
roadways. The practice significantly reduces grading costs by eliminating a second
round of grading in most circumstances. PW is developing a program that will base
stabilize all remaining gravel roads by the end of 2019. The remaining 43 miles of un -
stabilized gravel is estimated at costing approximately $240,000. Over the next several
months, PW will perform a cost/benefit analysis and report back to the Board during our
2018 budget presentation.
ATTACBMENTS:
Exhibit 1: Gravel Road List
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
