The data was further evaluated in order to determine the predominant crash types and contributing
factors. As shown in Table 2 below, the predominant causes of fatal and serious injury collisions in
Kittitas County are "hitting a fixed object" and "overturning." Out of all of the fatal and serious injury
collisions, 53.8% were caused by drivers running into a fixed object such as ditches, embankments, and
fences. An additional 26.9% of the fatal and serious injury collisions were caused by vehicles
overturning. Fatal and serious injury collisions mainly occurred under at least one of the following types
of conditions: dark or dusk lighting, at non -intersection locations, on roadway curves (horizontal curve),
exceeding safe speed, crossing over the centerline, vehicle type of motorcycle, and on roads with 50
mph speed limits. See Table 2 for more details.
TABLE 2
2011 through 2015 Crash Data
Fatal/Serious Injury Collision Types and Conditions
All Counties - Co.
Kittitos County
Maintained Roads
Ali Public Roads
#
%of
#
%of
#
%of
Collision Type
crashes
crashes
crashes
crashes
crashes
crashes
Hit Fixed Object- Roadway Ditch
3
21.4%
153
13.1%
307
9.7%
Hit Fixed Object- Ran Over Embankment
3
21.4%
110
9.4%
273
8.6%
Hit Fixed Object- Earth Bank
2
14.3%
108
9.3%
230
7.3%
Hit Fixed Object - Fence
1
7.1%
102
8.8%
199
6.3%
Hit Fixed Object -Guardrail
1
7.1%
49
1.7%
237
7.5%
Hit Fixed Object -Utility Pole
1
7.1%
136
4.5%
284
9.0%
Hit Fixed Object -Tree
1
7.1%
281
10.3%
589
18.6%
Hit Fixed Object- Luminaire Pole
1
7.1%
4
1.5%
50
1.6%
Hit Fixed Object - Drawbridge Crossing Arm Gate
1
7.1%
1
1.5%
1
0.0%
Total Hit Fixed Object
14
53.8%
1,165
43.2%
3,159
28.7%
Overturn
7
26.9%
311
11.5%
965
8.8%
Light Condition - Dark, No Street Lights
5
19.2%
788
29.2%
1,791
16.3%
Light Condition - Dusk
3
11.5%
96
3.6%
339
3.1%
Light Condition - Dark, Street Lights On
2
7.7
251
9.3%
2,370
21.5%
Light Condition - Dawn
1
3.8
48
1.8%
162
1.5%
TOTAL Light Condition
11
42.3%
1,187
45.7%
4,836
44.0%
Non -Intersection - Not Related
17
65.4%
1,815
67.2%
5,963
54.2%
Road Curvature - Horizontal Curve13
50%
1,038
38.5%
2,868
26.1%
Over Centerline
2
5.3%
485
12.5%
1,215
8.3%
Motorcycle
5
15.2%
570
15.4%
2,215
13.2%
Posted Speed at 50 mph
22
73.3%
878
25.8%
1,663
11.2%
