KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: July 9, 2018
TOPIC: Upper County Traffic Task Force
ACTION REQUESTED: Direct Solicitation of Interested Participants
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Direct that staff solicit interested individuals serving on an Upper County Traffic task
force.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• A recent public meeting regarding Upper County traffic issues was well attended
• The meeting providing no community consensus on the path forward
• Public Works suggests pulling together a community task force working with the
Sheriffs Office and PW identifying solution approaches
• PW has a suggested process for Board consideration (EXHIBIT 1)
BACKGROUND:
Ongoing Sunday traffic avoiding 1-90 congestion continues plaguing area residents. Our
attempt this summer limiting heavy truck traffic has not been successful. Speeding and
traffic volume are primary concerns. A recent public meeting underscores the need for
community involvement in any solution approach pursued by Public Works.
DISCUSSION:
PW is proposing the formulation of an Upper County traffic task force (EXHIBIT 1). We
desire attracting residents from Upper Peoh, Westside and Nelson Siding. Additionally,
we are suggesting that representatives from the City of Cle Elum, WSDOT and the
Sheriffs Office be included in the effort.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Fiscal impacts are not determined at this time. Rental fees for meeting venue are the
likely first financial impact.
ATTACHMENTS:
Exhibit 1: Suggested Upper County Traffic Task Force solution approach
Page] of 2
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
