03/07/2016 MINUTES 1 COMMISSIONERS' MINUTES KITTITAS COUNTY, WASHINGTON COMMISSIONERS CONFERENCE ROOM REGULAR MEETING MONDAY 10:00 A.M. MARCH 7, 2016 Board members present: Chairman Obie O’Brien; Vice-Chairman Paul Jewell & Commissioner Gary Berndt. Others: Mandy Buchholz, Deputy Clerk of the Board; Brenda Larsen, Fire Marshal. REGULAR MEETING DEPARTMENT HEAD FIRE MARSHAL Brenda Larsen, Fire Marshal reviewed some proposed budget savings depending on the level of experience the County hires to fill her position as Fire Marshal. She asked if with the savings could be offered to her Deputy Fire Marshal. She stressed the importance of retaining the Deputy Fire Marshal during this transition so that the institutional knowledge will remain. She also suggested the Board consider bringing in Jeff Moore (previous Deputy Fire Marshal) as a mentor for the current Deputy Fire Marshal in the interim as well as if the current Deputy Fire Marshal was to apply and be hired as the Fire Marshal. She stated that she is sending the current Deputy Fire Marshal to training next week so that he can strengthen his understanding regarding Codes. Commissioner Jewell stated that most likely the Board will appoint the Deputy Fire Marshal as the Interim Fire Marshal and encouraged Ms. Larsen to draft a PAF prior to her leaving. He stated that it comes with a stipend. However he was not comfortable doing an increase now as they have explained to the Management Team that they are working on a process to address the issues of pay throughout the County. Commissioner Berndt and Chairman O’Brien agreed that the Interim PAF was okay but would need to wait for an increase until the County as a whole can be addressed and not just cherry picking certain departments.
