BRIEFING SUMMARY: r Request from local resident (Stockdale) Complaint of speeding and use of compression brakes Speeding is occurring typically in the afternoons from 1:00 PM local time to 4:00 PM. BACKGROUND: Recently, staff received a request for a speed study along Main Street in Vantage. Staff collected traffic data during the week of 03125 to 0410112019. The results from the study are attached as EXHIBIT I for Board review. DISCUSSION: Main Street is signed at 35 MPH. The 85`h percentile speed during the study period is 44 MPH. Speeding is occurring typically in the afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM local time. It also appears that truck traffic is in the corridor between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM daily, This is likely the source of compression braking that is being reported. PW is reluctant to sign Main Street for no compression braking as it is unlikely to be enforced and creates a false expectation of service on the part of local residents. PW will notice law enforcement of the documented speeding and associated time of day for possible enforcement consideration. Given the 850' percentile speed reported, PW believes it prudent to obtain and deploy one interactive speed sign northbound and one southbound along Allain Street. FISCAL IMPACTS: The interactive speed signs are costing PW approximately $5,000 each.
