KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: August 26, 2019
TOPIC: Game Farm Road Speed Reduction
ACTION REQUESTED: Set a Public Hearing Considering a Speed Reduction for
Game Farm Road Mile Post 1.04 to Mile Post 2.54
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Set a public hearing considering a speed reduction for Game Farm Road mile post 1.04
(Wilson Creek Road) to mile post 2.54.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• Recently, Public Works (PW) conducted a sight distance study on four vertical curves
on Game Farm Road between Wilson Creek Road and Naneum Road
• The road segment is currently 50 MPH
• The roadway lanes are narrow, approximately ten feet
• Sight distance for three curves is met at 35 MPH with a single curve dropping down
to 25 MPH
• PW suggests reducing the speed to 35 MPH and signing an advisory of 25 MPH at
the worse curve
BACKGROUND:
A moderate sized subdivision is approved and the road network has been taken on system on
Game Farm between Wilson Creek Road and Naneum Road. Construction of residential lots
has not begun at this time. Once built, the residential traffic on the road segment will likely
double in average daily traffic counts. Existing vertical curves do not meet minimum sight
distance design standards for 50 MPH.
ETI' Curtis has conducted an engineering evaluation of existing vertical curves along Game
Farm Road and confirmed the curves do not meet minimum sight distance requirements for
50 MPH. One curve does not meet 35 MPH design standards. PW recommends reducing the
speed on Game Farm (1.04 to 2.54) to 35 MPH and signing an advisory at 25 MPH for single
none compliant curve.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Resigning the road segment is expected to cost approximately $2,000.
ATTACHMENTS:
Exhibit 1: Curve graphic
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY CONMUSSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
