Cook <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Support the Director's ongoing involvement with Floodplains by Design and prioritize <br />policy group work products. <br />BRIEFING SUMMARY: <br />• The Director of Public Works has been working with state floodplain managers <br />for the past year supporting the Nature Conservancy and the Floodplain by Design <br />grant program. <br />• The Director if part of the policy group. <br />• Several working groups have been created from approximately 30 participants <br />statewide. <br />• Owing to recent workload impacts, the Director has not been able to fully <br />participate in ongoing revisions to the program. <br />• Recently, the Nature Conservancy contacted the Director requesting commitment <br />to the ongoing program revision process. <br />BACKGROUND: <br />During 2019, PW has been working with state floodplain managers reviewing the <br />Floodplain by Design program (EXHIBIT 1). The Nature Conservancy is challenging <br />state floodplain managers to devise the program for long term sustainability. Recently, <br />PW has been unable to fully participate owing to workload impacts. <br />DISCUSSION: <br />The Nature Conservancy desires ongoing participation from PW. Two individuals <br />represent the east side of the state in this process (Yakima County and Kittitas County). <br />PW presents an eastside perspective that is unique in the process. The group worked to <br />prepare materials for legislators during the previous legislative session.
