KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY,SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: March 9, 2020
TOPIC: Easton School District Traffic Control Measures Request
6
ACTION REQUESTED: Direct Staff on Traffic Control Measures Request
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Direct staff to purchase and/or partner with the Easton School District on traffic control
measures on Railroad Avenue in Easton.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• Staff recently received a request from the Easton School District (ESD),
• ESD is requesting two (2) interactive speed limits signs.
• Additional crosswalk identification improvements are also being requested.
BACKGROUND:
With the increased traffic and intermittent road closures on I-90 Easton is experiencing
heavy traffic on Railroad Street where the school is located. Travelers are traveling the
above posted speed limit and with no steady traffic enforcement ESD is requesting
support from Public Works for additional signage. Additionally, there is no curbs and/or
sidewalks in Easton and with students, parents and staff going to school creates a safety
hazard.
DISCUSSION:
Currently, the Upper Kittitas County Trattic Advisory Committee is being formulated. In
the absence of this Committee, Public Works is continuing to manage ongoing issues and
concerns with safety and increased traffic along the I-90 Corridor. Public Works is
tasked with problem solving with area residents and stakeholders for solutions regarding
traffic control measures. Public Works proposes discussing options with ESD and
possibly partnering on the costs for the requested signage and additional crosswalk
improvements if within both the Public Works budget and the budget of ESD.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Current estimate is $8,409.03 for labor, signs and materials for installation of radar speed
signs and crosswalk improvements.
ATTACHMENTS:
Easton School District letter of request.
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY CONMSSIONERS WORK SESSION' STAFF REPORT
