KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
ENGINEER'S REPORT — GAME FARM ROAD (MILE POST 1.04 TO MILE POST
2.54) SPEED LIMIT REDUCTION REQUEST
PUBLIC HEARING DATE SEPTEMBER 17, 2019
ACTION REQUESTED CONSIDER REDUCING THE POSTED
SPEED FROM 50 MPH TO 35 MPH
LEAD STAFF: Mark R. Cook, Public Works Director/County Engineer
RECOMMENDATION:
Reduce the posted 50 Mile per Hour (MPH) speed limit to 35 MPH.
BACKGROUND:
Currently the speed limit along Game Farm Road from Wilson Creek Road (MP 1.04) to Naneum
Road (MP 2.54) is 50 MPH. A county resident requested the County Engineer evaluate the road
segment for sight distance restrictions resulting from numerous vertical curves in the roadway
segment. Public Works survey staff conducted a survey of four vertical curves following the site
visit by the County Engineer. The results of the survey were presented to Kittitas County
Commissioners during Public Works study session of August 26, 2019.
DISCUSSION:
County Roads are typically designed to national standards relative to horizontal and vertical
curve requirements. Vertical curves typically are designed such that a car can safely stop in a
distance defined by the posted speed limit. The four vertical curves surveyed on Game Farm
Road do not meet national minimum standards for safe sight stopping distance at 50 MPH.
Three of the curves meet the requirements for 35 MPH while a fourth requires a slower speed.
Public Works proposes lowering the speed limit on Game Farm Road (MP 1.04 to MP 2.54) to
meet minimum national standards for safe sight stopping distance. The fourth curve will be
signed as an advisory 25 MPH. These changes are anticipated to increase safety for area
residents and the traveling public.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
The cost of re -posting Game Farm Road to 35 MPH is expected not to exceed $3,000.00.
ATTACHMENTS:
EXHIBIT 1: Game Farm Road Survey Results
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY CONMUSSIONERS ENGINEER'S REPORT
