Kittitas County Department of Public Works <br />POLICY FOR ESTABLISHING SPEED ZONES <br />PURPOSE: The Department of Public Works receives numerous requests to establish speed <br />zones. The following policy is proposed to provide a clearly defined process for responding to <br />those requests. <br />APPLICATION: <br />individuals who would like to request a speed zone be established will be required to submit a <br />"Request for Speed Zone" application to the Department of Public Works. The information <br />required to process any such request includes: <br />1. Name and address of person requesting action <br />2. Date of application <br />3. Telephone number where applicant can be contacted <br />4. Name of road to be considered <br />S. Approximate location / limits of request <br />6. Reason for request <br />7. Signature of Applicant <br />Completed "Request for Speed Zone" applications shall be directed to the Director of Public <br />Works / County Engineer for review. <br />REVIEW OF APPLICATION/RECOMMENDATION <br />The Director will conduct a speed study which considers existing traffic speeds and volumes, <br />roadside friction, accident history, pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and roadway geometrics and <br />surface conditions. <br />Based on the speed study, the Director will determine the most appropriate maximum speed <br />for the section of road. The recommended speed will be based on the 85* percentile of the <br />existing traffic, the pace of the existing traffic, as well as consideration of the factors listed <br />above. <br />Policy for establishing Speed Zones <br />Adopted 4/5/5994 <br />Resolution No, 94-37 <br />G/Eng/Road Log/Speed studies <br />
