This project provides intersection improvements for No. 6 Rd and Vantage Hwy, as well as two
other intersections along Kittitas Hwy at Matthews Rd and No. 6 Rd, which have been identified
for safety improvements. Kittitas Hwy is a high -ADT corridor with an overall roadway that is in
good condition with appropriate countermeasures in place. This project would provide
monitoring and identification of potential spot -improvements to these heavily traveled
intersections. Kittitas County recognizes that improvements to this corridor may provide benefit
to a great number of travelers, and any improvements that could reduce potential future
crashes are beneficial.
Additionally, Kittitas Hwy has recently undergone large scale improvements. The county is taking
this opportunity to evaluate the countermeasures recently installed for performance success to
see if intersection related accidents decrease. This will allow for identification of whether or not
additional countermeasures may need to be implemented at the Matthews Rd and No. 6 Rd
intersections of Kittitas Hwy.
The combination of accident history at No. 6 Rd and Vantage Hwy along with a site visit brought
this segment into the list of projects. The Vantage Hwy/No. 6 Rd project would include providing
an adequate clear zone, signs, and possible realignment. Monitoring and further evaluation will
also continue at this location to identify potential safety improvement opportunities.
8. Huntzinger Road Safety Improvements
a. Phase 1 -MP 2.70 to MP 4.88
b. Phase 2 -MP 5.14 to MP 6.99
c. Phase 3 -MP 6.99 to MP 10.74
Huntzinger Road had several segments of road that scored high on the risk-based prioritization.
Although there is no significant accident data to reflect the hazards, the road characteristics of
the road show several areas of curves; both vertical and horizontal, steep embankments and no
shoulder which are the largest contributing factors to run -off-road accidents. Guardrail, signing
and delineation improvements to this corridor are cost -prohibitive so the county has prioritized
the phases in order of mileposts.
14
