i. 15 bridges or structures
These bridges were identified with lower risk because they feature bridge rail and approaches;
however, the rail and/or approaches and terminal do not meet current standards for
crashworthiness and will need to be upgraded to maintain adequate protection for errant
vehicles. There are 18 bridges and/or structures that have been rated as Code 1. These
structures have rail and approaches yet do not meet code. The priority is low on this project as
the bridges are functional but will need updated railing in the future to assist in preventing
serious injury or fatal accidents.
5. Denmark Road Safety Improvements
Improvement of a sharp corner with steep embankments at MP 3.57 would aid to prevent run-
off -road accidents on this specific road as it has a history of accidents at this location and was
identified on a previous safety plan. The priority level is lower than other projects because it
only targets a specific location and road characteristic. The county included multiple road
segments to provide improvements to this entire roadway corridor, from MP 0.50 to MP 4.35
which includes bundling bridge rail improvements to the project for efficiency and cost effective
contract letting.
6. Clear Zone Inventory
Through data collection and analysis of this safety plan, it has been identified that an inventory
of clear zones in Kittitas County would greatly benefit the process for future safety plans and
project proposals. Up to date and accurate data allows the county to better identify future
project locations that support the goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on the road
system. Although it has a lower priority than actual projects, it is a low cost proposal that could
also reduce the cost of future projects. This effort would include field data collection, database
creation, and scoping of mitigation opportunities identified.
7. Corridor and Intersection Safety Improvements
13
