..... :z: Washington State "II Department of Transportation
Project Description (two pages)
Describe the problem this project is designed to solve in relation to both the local public
transportation system and the broader regional transportation system. Include the
location and the specific congested corridor or situation.
On an average day, 28,000 vehicles travel over Snoqualmie Pass. This number is
estimated to double on weekends and holidays. WSDOT expects these traffic volumes
to increase 2.1 percent every year, reaching an average of over 41 ,000 vehicles per day
by 2030.
The 2010 U.S. census data indicates there are 1,395 daily trips leaving Kittitas County
and traveling on 1-90 to King, Snohomish, Pierce, Kitsap, or Thurston Counties. There
are currently no deSignated park and ride lots located within Kittitas County.
WSDOT has observed an average of 7 vehicles parking in the vicinity of the proposed
park and ride lot, located on the north side of 1-90, at Exit 78. Currently, the undeveloped
piece of WSDOT right of way being used by commuters is an unpaved lot with no
lighting, and unmaintained access location. WSDOT has stated that there are no
guarantees these cars parked on this lot will not be towed because they are trespassing
(violating state law). Parking will not be allowed on this parcel of land by WSDOT,
unless a park and ride is established.
Our project will help address the traffic congestion on 1-90 by providing a park and ride
lot to encourage commuters to reduce the number of vehicles in this corridor by
carpooling or vanpooling.
