August 7, 2017
Kittitas County
Community Development Services
411 North Ruby Street, Suite 2
Ellensburg, WA. 98926
Attn: Mr. Dan Carlson
Regarding —Marion Meadows PUD (PD -17-00001)
Associated Conditional Use Permit (CU -17-00001)
Development Agreement (DV -17-00001)
Long Plat (LP -17-00001)
Subject: Marion Meadows PUD — Wake-up call
On July 22, 2017 at 4:16 a.m. multiple Upper County fire departments were paged out to multiple
structure fires along with brush fires in the 800 block of Oakmont Drive, off of Westside Road.
This fire had the potential to be a major disaster as many, many residents, to the east of 802 Oakmont
Drive, had NO escape route had this fire not been controlled rapidly.
There were a lot of very nervous people east of that fire and a lot of nervous firefighters working to
stop the spread of the fire.
Several factors had a huge impact in preventing further loss of property and possible loss of lives.
1. Most importantly the first firefighters, on the scene immediately, requested mutual aid.
2. It was a Saturday morning, at 4:16 a.m., and most Upper County volunteers were home and
able to respond rapidly.
3. It was in July, not August or September, when it is much drier.
4. Luckily the wind conditions were light.
If this would have happened in late August on a windy day when most volunteers are at work and not
available the outcome could have been much different. This same condition exists in many areas of the
county where a fire in the wrong place, on the wrong day could be catastrophic.
Hopefully the Oakmont Drive fire is a wake-up call to CDS that Marion Meadows PUD, with one
way in and one way out, is a had idea.
Sincerely,
John R.Jensen
Easton Fire District #3
Volunteer Firefighter
PO Box 602
Easton, WA. 98925
509-656-0040
jensenjohnr@yahoo.com
Attachment - 1
