THERMO o$' FLUIDS
The Responsible Solution
Title: Loading and Unloading Policy
Policy No:
70.03.00
Issued: 6/22/2009
Revised:
1/4/2012
Originator: TH
Approved:
BH
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide TFI drivers with safe and efficient procedures for use
during bulk truck loading and unloading activity. The following procedures are to be
followed at all times and are to be covered in the new hire orientation training. Our goal is
to minimize environmental impacts and foster safe behavior during every event.
BACKGROUND
Although the operations of loading and unloading TFI trucks and trailers seem routine, you
must guard against the dangers of engaging in unsafe practices resulting from
complacency, carelessness, personal demands and other distractions. This procedure,
coupled with your diligence and helpful supervision, are the surest ways to guarantee safe
loading and unloading at all times, and especially during demanding times.
Safety and concern for you, your customers, the public and the environment is TFI's top
priority. Any truck loading or unloading operation can only proceed once you are sure and
confident that you can proceed with safety! Should doubts about safety during loading or
unloading arise, do not continue until you have discussed the relevant safety issues with
your supervisor. Ultimately, you will make the final decision to load or unload.
TFI has developed truck loading and unloading procedures in compliance with the applicable
federal regulations, 49 CFR 171-180, to minimize risk and safeguard against hazards in the
workplace. However, these guidelines can only serve as general procedures, not step-by-
step checklists. If you ever require detailed assistance, you should contact your supervisor.
PROCEDURE
Safe
Smoking and Open Flames
Because of the volatile, flammable and explosive characteristics of petroleum fluids, open
flames or sparks are an extreme hazard in our workplace. No smoking or open flames are
allowed in or around your truck or tanks at any time. Follow all non-smoking guidelines as
posted by your customer and at TFI facilities.
